  • The way of History
    2024/01/01

As a little guide: the way I view History, and the way I'm going to shape this podcast are as follows:

Every two weeks, I will make an episode of this history. With the disorderly episodes with the details, politics and names, and the larger orderly episodes with the conclusions and connections. The two perspectives will be separated. The details will have backing up with sources, maps and pictures, and the order will have its due as well. For now the short, guiding episode and, next episode the beginning of History.

  • Trailer: a History of the Netherlands!
    2024/01/01

There is history and there is History. We have two ways of shaping the story of the past: the disorderly way of telling thousands of peculiarities and improbabilities, with intrigues, revolutions, coups, dynasties and names. And the shaping of a larger narrative, with the connection between the disorder of history to the order of History. See, history is a knot with many perspectives, causes and consequences. History is the way this all fits in a puzzle: how disorder with the many details can help understand the order of things.

My task? To shape order to the History of the Netherlands, with the chaotic part not far behind. The value of History? Just like Marcus Garvey said:

''A people without knowledge of their past history, origin and culture, is like a tree without root''

  • New Frisians between the Weser and Zwin
    2023/10/20

Before the next big conflict, I need to introduce to you the next big player in Northern Europe: The Frisians. Even better: the New Frisians. This hodgepodge squeezed itself right between the Frankish kingdom of the Merovingian rulers and the dangerous North Sea. More the wonder that the Frisians will survive the pressure of the Franks, missionaries and the sea, living a wonderful life of some 1500 years. If you have the chance, watch the film 'Redbad'. It is not quite the true storyline of the Frisian king, but a good perspective.

  • Fantastic Frankish Figures
    2023/10/13
This time needs a special episode if you know what I mean. If you don't, I'd recommend you listen to the previous episodes. Because this time is conflicting with war and peace, stability yet instability and strong yet so weak. So today we view this strange period through the eyes of several leading or influential characters, characters such as Clovis and Gregory of Tours. I hope you enjoy the little details I might have missed earlier and that you'll visit the website or the Instagram page (or both: historyofnl.com and historyofthenetherlands)

  • How did the Merovingian Kingdom pass along?
    2023/10/06
With the growth of the Frankish state, the elements of the Dark Middle Ages settled in written history. The sources are scarce, or mostly dated some centuries after the fact. They are written by Christian monks and priests, who tend to be a little too pious and biased. But with the constant growth of the Frankish Kingdom (minus the civil wars) the conflict between the Franco-Latin culture and the Germanic culture clash, which makes the time all the more interesting! I hope you can follow along, if not, make sure to check out my website and Instagram page (Historyofnl.com and historyofthenetherlands)

  • Why were the Franks so successful?
    2023/09/29
Building an empire is a complicated thing, and the origins of the Frankish empire lay in factors which emerge from the Migration period. The process and result are also dependant on individuals, so after finishing the narrative about the Merovingian-Frankish kingdom I will make a bonus episode about outstanding individuals such as Clovis, the founder of this expanding kingdom. The podcast continues next time with the success story of the Franks. • When the (Germanic) Hammer Falls
    2023/09/22

The Roman provinces of Gallia and Germania were Flourishing semi-urban regions. Until the Germanic numbers overwhelmed and destroyed the last pillars of the classic period. For what it's worth, we're going into the Medieval times. Not yet though, cause an Empire such as the Roman one isn't destroyed with a whiff, and not completely either. We introduce peoples, cultures and social characteristics that will be so important for the Medieval inhabitants of the Netherlands and therefore the cornerstones of the Netherlands today. I recommend the Netflix film 'The Last Legion', which is, again, not quite accurate but still gives a good general impression of this time.

  • When barbarians meet Romans
    2023/09/15

This is a gateway from prehistory into the real history. The overwhelming amount of sources about the steamrolling and successful culture of the Romans leads an amateur historian like me to be quite content to be only talking about only the vital information about the whole empire because that method leaves some time to talk about the long-term consequences for the delta region, or in this case the whole Germania. For more information on the Romans, you should listen to the History of the Romans, I also recommend the not-completely accurate series called 'Barbarians' on Netflix, cause it gives a rough understanding of lifestyle etc. But for more information on Dutch History, I'd recommend you listen right on through. For a little linguistic puzzle: translate this ''Moi eemn''
