  • #14 You’re Sitting With a Gun In Your Mouth, What Now?
    2023/07/27

Today I’m sharing an episode of another podcast “You’re Blank, What Now?” With Marci Nettles. I was privileged and honored to be interviewed by Marci on her podcast and we get into the weeds on some very important and heavy stuff. I hope you enjoy and get a lot out of it. Be sure to check out the “You’re Blank, What Now?” here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/youre-blank-what-now/id1564521392`

The following are Marci’s show notes from our interview:

In this episode, Joe Spector and I focus on Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress that led him from being a first responder (Police and Fire) to so much pain, distress, overload and chaos that led him to hitting what he thought he could no longer handle… finding himself “Sitting with a Gun in His Mouth.” Joe Spector is a retired firefighter who became a podcaster, author, and meditation/emotional fitness teacher after a very close call with suicide and a subsequent hard-fought transformation to radical wellness, unshakable happiness, and indestructible resiliency. His mission is to: -Teach how emotional & mental fitness is just like physical fitness and just as important. -To normalize and destigmatize the sharing and processing of emotions and experiences and mental health struggles. -To authentically share his own experiences and offer the guidance, tools, and resources needed to: maximize your happiness when times are good, overcome any obstacle when times are tough, and crush goals like a total boss. I am your host, Marci Nettles. I have had a lifetime of opportunities where I had the choice to Breakdown or Breakthrough. It is my hope this Podcast may become your light in the darkness, as you listen to the stories of people I consider “heroes.” Each one had a point where they too had to choose to either Breakdown or Breakthrough! Thank you for listening!

  • #13 Beating the Odds and Breaking the Cycles
    2023/07/13

This is a remarkable interview with an incredible dude. In this episode, I sit down with John O’Hagan. John is, first and foremost, Nora’s dad. He’s also a mid-century modern real estate specialist, a Brazilian Jiu jitsu Black Belt, and an all around amazing human being with a remarkable story.

This was a challenging interview and we discussed so many important topics such as:

    • The birth and subsequent near death of his daughter
    • (TW) Sexual assault
    • How John broke free from chronic anger and other challenging emotional patterns
    • How dudes can share space and help each other through difficult emotions and circumstances
    • How to turn pain into purpose, and break generational parenting cycles

If you ever need anything related to real estate or just wanna follow John on his journey, connect with him at www.retrorealestate.com or follow him on instagram @phxjohn

  • #12 The Framework You Need To Respond To Emotions and Challenges Rather Than React
    2023/06/29

Today I’d like to share a framework that you can use the next time you’re feeling intense anger, stress, anxiety, or any other sh*tty bad-vibe emotion (courtesy of my friend Eric Wal).

It’s called the “R.I.D.E. It Out” method, and it gives you the ability to control how you respond to a challenging circumstance or feeling rather than being reactive and at the mercy of events or emotions:

Relax: Take a few deep breaths, relaxing your jaw, neck, shoulders and hands on the exhale.

Investigate: Ask yourself; “Can I put a name to this feeling (rage, sadness, frustration, etc)?” “What set this feeling off?” “What’s making it better or worse?”

Determine: What’s the best plan right now? Ie: take space from the loved one I’m fighting with, call a friend to vent, meditate, cry, punch a punching bag, write in a journal, go for a run, etc.

Engage: Now that you’ve done all of those steps and created some space, perspective and a strategy, engage with your plan, mind, and emotions to feel, heal, process, release, and get back to the good vibes.

I share a bit more detail and specific examples of how to utilize this tool on this week’s episode of The Grit, Growth, and Gratitude Podcast and you don’t wanna miss it, so tune in here:
