In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we arrive at the "crown jewel" of all the Big Thunder Mountain Railroads in our series, the one that graces an island in Disneyland Paris. But in order to understand what makes this mountain the best version that Tony Baxter and the Imagineering team ever created, we have to first understand the context of Disneyland Paris's Frontierland as a whole. As we dig into the concepts and backstories that made this unique land magnificent, we also uncover some unusual movie connections, strange foreshadowing signs, secret tributes, and a few throwbacks to Disney's rich history. We also discover why barns are red, how the O.K. Corral got its name, and why priceless art was removed from one of the restaurants. What secret tributes can be found in Big Grizzly Mountain to several attractions that came before it?

In this episode of Distory with Kate & Kirk, we laugh our way through the creative storytelling of Hong Kong Disneyland's Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars. Starting with the backstory of Grizzly Gulch's resident bears (and a huge gold nugget), we then move through into the ride to find some incredible details in the queue that not only honor Chinese culture but are also a throwback to the detailed history of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad that we've been uncovering throughout this series. Kirk asks some inappropriate questions about bears, Kate laughs at his fictional niece, we learn a little about sawmills and stoves, and find some magnificent crates that hold a few nods to previously explored places. After going for a thrilling ride in an unlucky mine, we meet three curious bears, remember Marc Davis, and find a number that has reversed its meaning from the one we found in Disneyland's Big Thunder.

What piece of Disney history is hanging in Tokyo's Big Thunder Mountain?

On this episode of Distory, we wrap up our visit to Westernland in Tokyo Disneyland as we hop aboard a runaway train and compare the layout of this version of Big Thunder Mountain with the ones found in Disneyland and Magic Kingdom parks. Along the way, we talk homesteading, sludgy pancakes, cowboy coffee, and bats (both with and without strings). We then travel over to Hong Kong’s Grizzly Gulch where we discover some nods to Disneyland’s history hidden in this miniature version of Frontierland. After a tour of the town and its backstory, we meet a very Lucky dog, a giant nugget, grab some (not so) traditional mining food, and meet a man named Tiny who did a little too much skylarking. We end this episode by going off the rails on a nautical etymology tangent, with Kirk getting irritated at Kate for mixing metaphors when it comes to dad jokes.
