• Exploring masculinity part 2: How can men empower themselves and each other
    2025/02/12

In our last episode we explored some of the huge challenges many men face, including performing worse in school than girls, higher rates of suicide, alcoholism and homelessness than women, and the pressure to suppress their emotions and not ask for help.

In this episode we explore the most powerful techniques, methodologies and resources that Andy has used to support himself and his clients with overcoming some of the negative impacts that a very limited idea of what it means to be a man can have.

    We discuss:

🔹 An important quality men can embrace if they are to free themselves from the limitations of masculine stereotypes.

🔹 How to reconnect withyour body and emotions (and why that’s essential)

🔹 Whybrotherhood and community are so important for men’s well-being

🔹 How theworkplace can actually support men’s mental health instead of making it worse

🔹 What to do when that feeling of“not being enough” creeps in

  • Why Are Men Struggling? Exploring Masculinity in a Changing World
    2024/11/19

In this episode, Andy and Emma dive into the challenges many men are facing today, why these struggles are often overlooked, and how we can better support them.

They explore some stark realities: boys often perform worse than girls in school, men are less likely to earn a degree, and they face higher rates of addiction, incarceration, and premature death—whether through workplace accidents, violence, or suicide (at three times the rate of women).

In a time when conversations around toxic masculinity are on the rise, many men are left searching for positive role models and struggling to understand their identity and role in an ever-changing world.

Andy and Emma also discuss why masculinity can be such a difficult topic to talk about and offer perspectives on how we might open up this crucial conversation with greater empathy and understanding.

  • Connecting in Presence: A Live Demonstration of Circling + NVC
    2024/10/08

In this episode of the Connection Alchemy podcast, Emma and Andy are looking at what it’s like to be super honest and present with each other in each moment. Through simply seeing what is there between them as they record this episode.

This episode is a live demonstration of a process called ‘Circling’. It’s notoriously hard to explain what it is, but it could be described as a ‘meditative relational practice’ - an invitation into witnessing what’s alive in the present moment within myself, within others and our environment.

Emma and Andy witness and share intense sensations, body movements, fears about being judged, parts of them that want to be seen and others that want to hide… all unfolding moment by moment.

So why would you want to do circling? We hope you can get a sense of how it brings more honesty, connection, aliveness and the possibility of revealing what was previously hidden in a way that can be both liberating and healing.

  • Beyond polarisation: bridging the divide in a divided world (NVC + The UK Riots 2024)
    2024/09/04

In this episode, Andy and Emma discuss the recent riots in the UK and what they reveal about polarisation in our society. They look at the events through the lens of one social media post from someone who was in favour of the protests and one that was violently condemning them, attempting to understand what both sides are caring for in this conflict through the lens of Nonviolent Communication. They discuss: - How polarisation prevents us from addressing some of society's most pressing problems - The disempowering effects of the victim/perpetrator narrative. - The importance of humanising those with whom we fundamentally disagree and how not listening can create the conditions for future violence. - Whether fighting against opposing views is always the best approach, questioning whether it might actually worsen the divide. - How the deeply ingrained concept of good versus evil shapes our language and actions. - Whether force can be used with empathy and compassion - What’s driving the anger behind violent protests - The implications of labelling others as "terrorists" and how such language can foster more conflict - The consequences of using dehumanising language and how it might mirror the very violence we're protesting against, potentially escalating tensions further. - They reflect that if we don’t start listening, the bricks thrown in anger today might turn into bombs tomorrow. Join them as we navigate these challenging topics with nuance and empathy. • Building resilience by letting go of control
    2024/07/17

In this episode, Emma and Andy discuss their relationship with control. We admit at the start that we feel a bit nervous because it’s a topic that we’re both feeling challenged by at the moment.

Emma opens up about wanting to change the kind of work she offers but not knowing what it will look like yet. This means she’s decided to let go of her impulse to plan what her work looks like for the rest of the year, and trust that it will become clearer. She talks about how being in that state of uncertainty can feel very uncomfortable.

Andy shares about some of the areas of his life he feels an urge to control and how hard it can feel to let go of getting the result that he wants when it comes to money, health and family.

    We also discuss:

    - Why trying to controlling things often backfires, and we get the opposite of what we wanted

    - Approaches to letting go of trying to force the outcomes you want, so that you can open to unexpected positive results.

    - How to discern when you’re making a decision out of anxiety

    - How to develop tolerance for being in uncertainty

    - Finding the balance between doing what you can do influence the result you want without being stressfully attached to the outcome

They emphasize the importance of expressing anger constructively and communicating effectively. Understanding and empathizing with the underlying emotions that fuel anger are key themes, along with strategies to manage and express anger healthily and openly, seeing the gift that it caries rather than making it "bad" or "wrong" and expressing through suppressed rage or unprocessed expression which can cause harm to your relationships. Key Discussion Points: Understanding Anger: Anger signifies deep caring and importance. Suppression or explosion of anger can be harmful. Authentic expression can lead to connection and vulnerability. Effective Communication: Using nonviolent communication techniques. Recognizing anger as a natural emotion. • The Power of Polarity in Communication: Balancing Authenticity + Compassion
    2024/05/29

In this episode, we dive into the concept of polarity in communication, a theme that frequently arises in my workshops on Compassionate and Authentic Relating (Nonviolent Communication).

Using the symbolic energies of yin and yang, I explain how an imbalance—whether it’s overexpressing or holding back—can disrupt trust and intimacy. We look at how we can identify and navigate these imbalances to create more meaningful, honest and harmonious connections.

    I will cover:

    - Recognizing when you're mostly focused on either honest self-expression or compassion.

    - The impact of these imbalances on trust and intimacy in relationships.

    - Practical tips to maintain a healthy balance between being compassionate and staying true to yourself.

To help you apply these concepts, I leave you with reflective journaling prompts designed to bring more awareness and balance into your interactions.

IF you want to learn how to tune up in both the skills of compassionate listening and authentic self expression, the Authentic + Compassionate Relating Course starts this time next week! (5th June 2024)
