  • When Silence Isn't an Option
    2025/09/17

Processing the Charlie Kirk assassination has been difficult, especially seeing people celebrate the death of someone for their beliefs regardless of whether you agreed with him.

    • When someone is killed for their beliefs, it's bigger than one person—it's an attack on free speech
    • Life's fragility is a sobering reminder that we aren't guaranteed tomorrow
    • Having courage to speak your mind should never cost anyone their life
    • Revenge, hate and more violence only continues the destructive cycle
    • We must decide whether to let anger consume us or find a better way forward
    • We can debate strongly while still maintaining our shared humanity
    • Cherish your loved ones and be present because tomorrow isn't promised

  • They Served Us, Now We Serve Them: The Farm to Veteran Story
    2025/09/05

A simple concept born on a 60-acre farm outside Chicago has blossomed into a nationwide movement feeding thousands of veterans. Michelle, Senior Director of Farm to Veteran, shares the remarkable journey of this young nonprofit that's donated over 420,000 meals to veterans across nine states since 2020.

What began with just 20 chickens has expanded into a comprehensive operation with 400 chickens producing up to 100 dozen eggs weekly, along with beef, pork, and produce – all donated to veterans in need. Michelle explains their straightforward philosophy: "Veterans served us, so now it's our turn to serve them." This dedication stems from their founder's deep appreciation for military service and recognition that quality nutrition can help heal both body and mind.

  • Navy's Forgotten Heroes: The Swift Boat Legacy
    2025/05/07

Born on Veterans Day in San Antonio, Raul Herrera never expected his Navy enlistment for educational benefits would lead him into the heart of Vietnam's maritime battlefield. In this powerful conversation, Herrera takes us aboard PCF-79, one of the Swift Boats that fundamentally altered the course of the Vietnam War yet remains largely overlooked in military history.

Herrera's vivid recollections transport listeners to July 15, 1967, when his six-man crew intercepted and captured an enemy trawler attempting to deliver supplies to Viet Cong forces. This high-profile mission earned them recognition from South Vietnam's highest leadership but also placed a bounty on their heads. Just months later, an ambush would claim the life of Boatswain's Mate Bobby Don Carver, Herrera's tough-love mentor whose death would haunt him for decades.

Most compelling is Herrera's forty-year journey to document this overlooked chapter of military history, a process that ultimately provided healing from undiagnosed PTSD. His book "Capturing Skunk Alpha" stands as both personal catharsis and historical preservation, ensuring the contributions of Swift Boat sailors won't be forgotten as their numbers dwindle.

For anyone interested in untold military stories, the personal costs of war, or the healing power of storytelling, this episode offers profound insights from a veteran who transformed personal trauma into historical legacy.
