Some stories are solved. Some are buried. Some refuse to stay closed.

Black Chamber Society is a narrative documentary podcast examining extraordinary events through the records they left behind.

Disappearances. Intelligence operations. Historic crimes. Unexplained incidents. Heists. Disasters. Survival stories. And mysteries that have resisted easy answers.

Each meeting opens a new Black Letter. We separate the documented record from the mythology that accumulated around it, following the evidence as far as it will take us—and stopping where it stops.

No invented answers. No forced conclusions.

Every file leaves something behind.

  • Black Letter №002: The Mary Celeste
    2026/09/22

On November 7, 1872, the Mary Celeste departed New York for Genoa carrying 1,701 barrels of commercial alcohol—and ten people.

Weeks later, the vessel was found drifting near the Azores. Its captain, his family, and the entire crew were gone. The ship’s boat was missing. So were its sextant and chronometer. Yet the Mary Celeste remained afloat, carrying most of its cargo and offering no proven answer for what had happened.

In Black Letter №002, Michael C. Vincent follows the surviving record from the ship’s final log entry through its discovery by the Dei Gratia and the Gibraltar salvage proceedings that followed. The episode examines the damaged rigging, water in the hold, disassembled pump, suspected stains, missing navigational instruments, and nine empty alcohol barrels—separating documented evidence from the murder allegations, vapor theories, and fictional embellishments that transformed the vessel into a legendary ghost ship.

There are two Mary Celestes: the historical vessel and the legend created after it.

The record ends with a missing boat. The legend begins where the record stops.

  • The Red Thread №001: D. B. Cooper — Three Theories That Won't Die
    2026/09/19

The Black Letter established what the record can prove.

Now we follow what happens when that record runs out.

More than fifty years after D. B. Cooper disappeared from Northwest Orient Flight 305, the unanswered questions have produced theories ranging from plausible to extraordinary.

In the first episode of The Red Thread, we pull on three of the most persistent.

Could microscopic particles discovered on Cooper’s tie connect him to America’s aerospace or specialty-metals industries?

Was convicted skyjacker Richard Floyd McCoy Jr. actually D. B. Cooper—and did investigators dismiss the connection too quickly?

And what if the most fundamental assumption in the case is wrong? What if Cooper didn’t jump where investigators believed he did—or never made the jump at all?

The evidence gets us only so far.

    After that, the threads begin.

    The history is real.

The connections are yours to make.

    Keep pulling the thread.

The Red Thread is a companion series from the Black Chamber Society exploring the theories, disputed connections, conspiracies, and unanswered questions that begin where the documented record ends.

  • Black Letter №001: D. B. Cooper
    2026/09/17

On November 24, 1971, a passenger calling himself Dan Cooper boarded Northwest Orient Flight 305 in Portland. Within hours, $200,000 had changed hands, four parachutes had been delivered, and Cooper had disappeared from the rear of a Boeing 727 somewhere over the Pacific Northwest.

More than half a century later, the hijacker better known as D. B. Cooper remains unidentified.

In the first meeting of the Black Chamber Society, Black Letter №001 examines the surviving record: the ticket, the witnesses, the aircraft, the parachutes, the black tie left behind, the recovered ransom money, the search—and the enormous space between what is known and what has become legend.
