On November 24, 1971, a passenger calling himself Dan Cooper boarded Northwest Orient Flight 305 in Portland. Within hours, $200,000 had changed hands, four parachutes had been delivered, and Cooper had disappeared from the rear of a Boeing 727 somewhere over the Pacific Northwest.
More than half a century later, the hijacker better known as D. B. Cooper remains unidentified.
In the first meeting of the Black Chamber Society, Black Letter №001 examines the surviving record: the ticket, the witnesses, the aircraft, the parachutes, the black tie left behind, the recovered ransom money, the search—and the enormous space between what is known and what has become legend.
