  • Is It Mechanics or Overuse? The Truth About High School Tommy John Surgery
    2026/09/09

    Send us Fan Mail

Tommy John surgery shouldn’t feel like a rite of passage for teenage pitchers, yet more high school baseball players are dealing with UCL tears and elbow sprains before they ever graduate. We sit down with Dan Deleandro, a sports physical therapist at Ohio State University Sports Med and an assistant varsity baseball coach, to get honest about what he’s seeing in the clinic and on the field and why the elbow is taking the hit more than the shoulder.

We dig into when throwing injuries show up most often, from cold early spring days with rushed warm ups to late summer fatigue after a packed travel baseball schedule. Dan breaks down the top risk groups, why velocity increases raise the stakes, and what changes once the elbow growth plate closes. We also challenge a few common pitching injury myths, including what the research says about curveballs, why fastballs can be the biggest stressor, and why a hard slider can become a problem before a player is ready.

From there, we get practical: smarter workload decisions for weekend tournaments, mechanics fixes that improve energy transfer and reduce arm stress, and “non negotiables” for pregame arm care. Dan also shares a clear eyed Tommy John recovery timeline for high school athletes and a story that shows how easily return to play can get rushed when emotions take over. If you coach, parent, or play youth baseball, this is a roadmap for protecting arms without killing development. Subscribe, share the show with a coach or parent, and leave a review so more programs hear this before the next injury.

  • How To Build Confident Baseball Players With Brutal Honesty
    2026/09/02

A lot of coaching advice sounds good until the game speeds up and the dugout gets tense. That’s why this conversation with Ben Bizier hit so hard. Ben shares a surprising tool that sharpened his feel for momentum and body language: playing cards. He explains how learning to “scan the table” becomes a real-world coaching skill for reading both dugouts, adjusting your message on the fly, and knowing when a player is actually hearing you.

From there, we get deep into player development at The Academy in Fort Myers, Florida. Ben breaks down how he designed his facility and staff approach to be adaptable, creative, and built for complete development, not just hitting reps. We talk about the Academy Method, the power of asking players for constructive criticism and suggested solutions, and why real accountability has to be supported by real structure. He also shares why he believes the goal is to change the player, not simply chase performance, so athletes can retain skills and adapt at higher levels.

We also dig into the hard edge of coaching: brutal honesty. Ben explains why players often crave direct truth when it’s paired with follow-up and care, plus practical ideas for training throws from multiple arm angles. And if you’ve ever used “take until you get a strike,” you’ll want to hear his case for “take until two strikes” as a smarter hitting strategy. If you care about baseball coaching, youth baseball training, recruiting, and building confident players, this one is packed.

  • Why Winning Follows When Culture Comes First
    2026/08/26

    Send us Fan Mail

You can feel it when a program is built to last and Highland Sparta High School baseball in Ohio has had that feeling for decades. We sit down with Donnie Kline and Travis Church, two coaches who have both been head coach and assistant coach in the same program, to unpack what actually drives long-term success when the roster changes every year. The headline is simple but hard to execute: culture first, players second, coaches third, and wins show up as the outcome.

We dig into why multi-sport athletes matter more than ever in high school baseball. Football and wrestling kids bring grit, role flexibility, and a competitive edge that carries into the spring, while multiple seasons help reduce burnout and keep young athletes growing. We also talk candidly about the pressure parents feel to specialize early and why we still push athletes to keep options open as long as possible.

From there, we get specific about player-led culture: standards that don’t change, ownership of the little things, and creating a “player-centric” program where athletes can run parts of practice and take pride in how they prepare. We share coaching lessons, including a decision that still stings, plus the fun moments that come from aggressive small ball and “chaos offense.” We also tackle the parent side of the job and what families often don’t see, then close with what it really takes to pursue college baseball: loving the process, lifting, nutrition, sleep, and embracing changing roles.

Subscribe to Baseball Coaches Unplugged, share this with a coach, and leave a review if it helps you. What standard do you want your program to be known for?
