  • Episode 143: Your 5 non-negotiables- finding balance during crunch time
    2025/07/23

    Send us a text

This episode is by request from my friend Fallon, who asks, "How do you find the balance between the art consuming you and the other important things/people in your life? Do you let it overtake you for the month(s) before, and then have a break after? Are you able to find breaks in between? If so, how??"

    What you'll hear:

    • shitty sound quality because I don't have my microphone here in Ireland (blame the snake).
    • One week down at the IADF, one week to go 2:00
    • Getting into the meat of Fallon's question of how to find balance during crunch time by defining what balance is and understanding that it's a dynamic state, not a static one 4:00
    • Why my initial thought of "yeah let it consume you!" is very biased because of the failsafe's I have built into my life 6:45
    • One approach to finding the elusive, dynamic balance during crunch time: Find your 5 non-negotiables and protect them with your whole chest 9:00
      • My five, as a starter pack: sleep, food, water, down time, solitude
    • Episode 141: "Rest" is not enough 16:30

  • Episode 142: WHY is it so hard to do stuff I like doing?
    2025/07/16

    Send us a text

    What you'll hear:

    • My girl Cris asked me to talk about this post on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DDehqMypsT_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
    • Mindless media consumption is "nothing box" and is by nature, easy passive pleasure 4:00
    • Both this and addictive behaviors are driven by dopamine 5:42
    • We tend to judge ourselves for these behaviors as though they are a moral failing on our part, even though it's literally how we were designed 8:00
    • Art-making is more expensive metabolically than mindless media consumption, and so is the cuddly chemicals like oxytocin 10:00
    • How chronic stress can interrupt good brain chemicals and impact female sexual function 14:00
    • Why the starving, tortured artist trope is a load of BS 16:00

  • Episode 140: WIP Sharings at Artists Residencies
    2025/07/02

    Send us a text

Today's episode is by request from my friend Vix, who asks:

"As someone who has been creating their own one-woman show, how do you show your work-in-progress if you’ve only got one act or partial act? I’m specifically referring to residencies that ask for works to be shown as part of their program (ex. “one night performance open to the public to show WIP,” “two nights of shows that the venue will help promote,” etc.). Do I just put on my 4-5 min aerial piece and then talk everyone to go home? What if I intend to create a much longer show (be it one person or multiple people), but I just haven’t gotten that far in the process? I love the idea of a WIP showing but is this what these residencies are really asking for?"

    Let's talk about it!

    • The "danger" of coming to an artist residency from the context of a gig worker, and how that can derail your experience during the residency by focusing solely on the end-of-residency showing
    • How does your context influence how you view the opportunity to share a WIP? 5:11
    • How I totally forgot this in real life 7:00
    • IF YOU LISTEN TO NOTHING ELSE IN THIS EPISODE, LISTEN TO THIS 8:40
    • How it COULD get sticky 11:00
    • For further listening about artist residencies, please see Episode 31: Artist Residencies, wth is that? and Episode 37: Artist Residencies for Aerialists
