Welcome to The STEM Guys' Life Board Meeting.

Tomato has lived in Tokyo for about a year — and this episode is what happens when someone who grew up in Saitama finally starts paying attention to the city's road layout.

The trigger: stepping off the train at Shin-Kiba, far to the east of Tokyo, and seeing a sign for Meiji-dori — the same road that runs along the west side of Ikebukuro and down through Shinjuku and Shibuya. How is the same road here?

Because Meiji-dori is a loop. It's Tokyo's Circular Route 5, wrapping around a significant chunk of the city.

From there: a tour of all eight of Tokyo's named circular routes, from Route 1 (the moat around the Imperial Palace) to Route 8 (Kanjuku-hachi, familiar to Saitama-area drivers). The inner routes hug the city center; the outer ones take wide arcs through residential and industrial zones. The gaikan (Outer Ring Road) and kenkando (Ken-O Expressway) complete the picture on the metropolitan fringe — though the gaikan still stops frustratingly short at Nerima, leaving a gap that forces drivers into a circuitous detour through northern Tokyo.

Tomato's proposal: Kurage should enter politics, represent Saitama, and use whatever power he accumulates to complete the Gaikan extension and improve access for the prefecture that, as last week's episode argued, is basically Beverly Hills.

The closing ask: make Tokyo's road network as intuitive as its train map. One is a masterpiece of legibility. The other is a mystery only taxi drivers fully understand.

Welcome to The STEM Guys' Life Board Meeting.

This week: a practice drill. The scenario — both hosts have been transferred from Osaka to a research facility in Ageo, Saitama. Each has ten minutes to find a property and make their case.

Kurage's pitch: a two-story unit in Ageo, 80 square meters, ¥110,000 per month including management fees, with two free parking spaces. Twenty-three minutes on foot to the station — but who needs a station when the company, a giant Aeon mall, and a sports park form a perfect triangle around your front door? Car-first lifestyle,郊外 (suburban) edition. Room to grow into a family someday.

Tomato's pitch: a 1DK seven minutes' walk from Urawa station, fourth floor (top floor of a low-rise), ¥100,000 per month. The bedroom is 2.7 tatami mats — just enough for a futon, and that's the point. His core argument: he doesn't want to live close enough to the office that he can't mentally disconnect. The commute is the decompression. And Urawa station puts central Tokyo within 20 minutes — a non-negotiable for someone who still considers themselves an urban person at heart.

Same transfer, same workplace, completely different answers. Property selection is a values test as much as a logistics problem.

The episode ends with a spirited debate about Saitama's internal city hierarchy — Urawa vs. Omiya vs. Ageo vs. Kitamoto. If you know, you know.

    🌏 For our international listeners:

Welcome to The STEM Guys' Life Board Meeting.

Kurage has to leave his company-provided apartment in a few months. His decision on where to move: a mirror-image 1K unit in the same building. Roughly 20 meters away. One floor down.

Yes, he's aware this sounds unusual. But the logic holds up.

No moving company needed — just a friend, a hand with the big furniture, and one yakiniku dinner. Moving costs: near zero. No new furniture required — just rotate what he has. Life environment: identical from day one, since every supermarket, station, and routine stays the same.

The backstory: his company's housing subsidy runs out after a certain number of years, meaning he has to leave the apartment the company selected for him — and the subsidy goes to zero. Rather than upgrading to a larger or trendier place (which would mean a significant rent increase), Kurage ran the numbers and found the same building was simply the best value available.

Priorities going in: walking distance to the station (non-negotiable), no elevator required (lower floors preferred — a past experience in a 10th-floor Finnish apartment made him reluctant to go out at all), no need for auto-lock. The upgrade from 1K to 1LDK would cost roughly ¥30,000–40,000 more per month. For now: not worth it.

The broader point: don't let a move push you into upgrading just because it feels like the right moment. Start from zero, define what you actually need, and let the logic lead — even if the answer is "same building, different floor."

Aimed at anyone in Japan's manufacturing sector approaching the end of their company housing period. This one's for you.
