Welcome to The STEM Guys' Life Board Meeting.
Tomato has lived in Tokyo for about a year — and this episode is what happens when someone who grew up in Saitama finally starts paying attention to the city's road layout.
The trigger: stepping off the train at Shin-Kiba, far to the east of Tokyo, and seeing a sign for Meiji-dori — the same road that runs along the west side of Ikebukuro and down through Shinjuku and Shibuya. How is the same road here?
Because Meiji-dori is a loop. It's Tokyo's Circular Route 5, wrapping around a significant chunk of the city.
From there: a tour of all eight of Tokyo's named circular routes, from Route 1 (the moat around the Imperial Palace) to Route 8 (Kanjuku-hachi, familiar to Saitama-area drivers). The inner routes hug the city center; the outer ones take wide arcs through residential and industrial zones. The gaikan (Outer Ring Road) and kenkando (Ken-O Expressway) complete the picture on the metropolitan fringe — though the gaikan still stops frustratingly short at Nerima, leaving a gap that forces drivers into a circuitous detour through northern Tokyo.
Tomato's proposal: Kurage should enter politics, represent Saitama, and use whatever power he accumulates to complete the Gaikan extension and improve access for the prefecture that, as last week's episode argued, is basically Beverly Hills.
The closing ask: make Tokyo's road network as intuitive as its train map. One is a masterpiece of legibility. The other is a mystery only taxi drivers fully understand.
