बालगङ्गाधरतिलकः विधिशास्त्रस्य अध्ययनानान्तरं न्यायवादिवृत्तित्वं न इच्छति यतः तत्र प्रतिदिनं प्रतिपदम् असत्यं वक्तव्यं भवति इति । सर्वाकारीयम् उद्योगम् अपि न इच्छति सर्वकारस्य दास्यताकारणतः । सः कस्मिंश्चित् विद्यालये अध्यापकवृत्तित्वम् आरब्धवान् । तदीयं मासिकं वेतनं त्रीणि रूप्यकाणि इति । तिलकस्य उदात्तं चिन्तारहितं च व्यवहारं दृष्ट्वा तस्य सुहृत् महत् आश्चर्यम् अनुभूतवान् ।

After studying law, Bal Gangadhar Tilak did not wish to practice as a lawyer, because in that profession one had to speak untruths at every step. He also did not want to take up government service, as it meant servitude to the rulers. Instead, he began working as a teacher in a school. His monthly salary was only three rupees. Seeing Tilak’s noble, worry-free conduct, his friend was greatly astonished.

कश्चन महात्मा भगवद्दर्शनस्य विषयं कञ्चन सज्जनं वदति - 'ईश्वरः अस्माकम् अन्तः एव तिष्ठति । मोहमायादिकारणतः वयं तस्य दर्शनं प्राप्तुं न शक्नुमः । भगवान् द्रष्टव्यः चेत् सर्वादौ मोहमायादयः त्यक्तव्याः' इति । 'अद्यैव भगवद्दर्शनार्थं प्रयासस्य आरम्भं करिष्यामि' इत्युक्त्वा प्रणम्य च ततः प्रस्थितवान् सः सज्जनः ।

A saint once explained to a devotee about the vision of God: “The Lord dwells within us. Because of delusion and illusion, we are unable to perceive Him. If one wishes to see God, first these veils of delusion must be cast aside.” Hearing this, the devotee bowed and said, “From today itself I will begin the effort to attain the vision of God,” and departed with resolve.

इयं कथा वर्तते गुणत्रयविषये । तमोगुणः मानवं संहर्तुं प्रयासं करोति । रजोगुणः कौटुम्बिकव्यवहारादिभिः तं बध्नाति । किन्तु सत्त्वगुणः तमोरजसोः पीडातः मानवं विमोच्य सुयोग्यं मार्गं दर्शयति । एतस्मिन् मार्गे भयं न विद्यते । एषः मार्गः मानवान् भगवच्चरणं प्रापयति ।

(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

This tale concerns the three guṇas (qualities of nature). Tamas seeks to destroy man, Rajas binds him through worldly duties and attachments, while Sattva frees him from the suffering caused by Tamas and Rajas, showing him the right path. On this path there is no fear, and it ultimately leads man to the feet of God.
