元NASAのロボットエンジニアであり、人気ウェブコミック「xkcd」の作者でもあるランドール・マンローによる『What If?』は、「もしも〜だったら？」という突飛な疑問に対して、驚くほど真面目に、そして科学的に答えていくユニークな一冊です。

内容的には『空想科学読本』を思わせますが、あちらのようにフィクションの設定を科学的に考察するのではなく、あくまで現実の科学を用いて、突飛ながらも理論上ありえる疑問に答えている点が異なります。そのため、知的好奇心をくすぐられる場面が多く、とても面白く読めました。

ただし、オーディオブック版だけで内容を十分に理解するのは難しく、正直、半分も頭に入らなかった印象です。というのも、文章自体は子どもでも読めるような平易な文体で書かれているのですが、数学や化学の用語、数式が頻繁に登場するため、それらに慣れていないと理解が追いつきません。また、図やイラストが省かれている点も、内容理解のハードルを上げています。

そこで後からKindle版を購入して読み直したところ、すべての内容がきちんと理解できました。ごく一部に専門用語はあるものの、難解な表現はほとんどなく、図や挿絵のおかげでスムーズに読み進められます。

結論としては、オーディオブック版はある程度理系の素養がある人向けであり、一般の読者にはKindleや紙の書籍で読むことをおすすめします。
