月日は百代の過客にして
行き交ふ年もまた旅人なり

旅の詩人ともいわれる松尾芭蕉は、四十六歳の春、まだ見ぬ陸奥(みちのく)の地をめざして門弟曾良（そら）と旅に出る。住み慣れた住まいを人に譲り、旅に死す覚悟をも持ちながら、これから足を踏み入れる未知なる世界に、芭蕉の心は高揚する。

かくして江戸・深川から日光、那須野と北上し、白河の関を越え、松島、平泉と奥州の道をゆく。立石寺、出羽三山、象潟(きさがた)などを巡り、北陸に出て越後、金沢を南下し、結びの地・大垣に至る。一五〇日余、約二四〇〇kmの行程であった。その後、何度も推敲が重ねられ「おくのほそ道」は完成する。

名文・名句が散りばめられた芭蕉の最高傑作ともいえる「おくのほそ道」は、今なお人々の心を漂泊の旅へといざなう・・・
