あらすじ・解説

Dangerously addictive, The Secrets of Us is a pulse-pounding exploration of a disturbed psyche and the bond between two sisters desperate to escape a troubled past.

Foster sisters Krystal and Nichole have always been there for each other, so when Nichole is committed to a psychiatric hospital after trying to kill her husband, Krystal drops everything to defend her.

Scarred by a hard upbringing, Nichole and Krystal managed to construct comfortable lives for themselves. Krystal became a respected lawyer, and Nichole was happily married to an architect - until Nichole starts raving that her husband isn’t her husband, believing that he’s an imposter.

Driven by fierce loyalty, Krystal starts asking questions, but she’s not sure she can bear the answers. Her investigation leads to the sisters’ dark shared past...to a horrible tragedy and a well-guarded lie that cemented their sisterly bond.

But that lie can’t kill the truth - the battered, gasping, clawing truth that’s coming for them both. Now Krystal and Nichole must both fight for the lives they’ve built before they’re consumed by the one they left behind.

wait... what?!?

I adore Lucinda Berry and couldn't wait for this book... but I feel like I must have missed something. it was like being on the first hill of a roller coaster for ever and ever, and instead of flying down the other side it just sort of went down a slight incline and stopped. What just happened?!?

Short changed

Well where do I start ???? First I rounded the score up from a 2.5. The narrator’s take made me laugh out loud during some of the serious parts. Her voice wasn’t meant for this story. Then the end leaves you empty handed!!!! I could go on but I won’t 😳! This is the 2nd Lucinda Berry book I’ve read and it will be the last 😒

Can't stand this narrator doing a man's voice.

Why does the publisher or whomever chooses narrator cut costs by having a female do a male voice? Ruins a good story. The difference between being willing to use a credit or not. Thank goodness this one was a sale one.

Good story but

That ending sucked!!!!! The story line was amazing- but the ending left the story open. Now the readers have to imagine what happened to the main characters. Ugh

Are you kidding me with this ending?

First of all, stupid women. Second, an attorney who doesn't know the law. Third, abrupt ending.

slow with no suspense

The description of this book sounds like it will be good. It was a bit disappointing. It is slow moving and hs not suspense. The story is a good one, just takes too long to get sanywhere.

Character driven story with twists

The Secrets of Us was a story of sisters, their pasts and the secrets they've kept that affect their present. It is a quick read/listen that pulls you in right from the beginning when one of the sisters receives a call that the other sister's house was set on fire. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

This story is about Nichole and Krystal, two foster children that became sisters through the system. They connected when they were young and have been there for each other through thick and thin and are as close as two biological sisters could be. Maybe even closer. When something happens and Nichole is put in the hospital, Krystal must find out how she got there and how she can save her from any harm.

Lucinda Berry created a story that is character driven and focuses on the sisters as a pair. We get their story from the past (from Nichole's POV) and present (from Krystal's POV). Something from the past leads up to their future and we are slowly given all the clues of their past and how that has to do with the present. The present is where I was trying to focus all my attention because of what was happening to Nichole and what had happened between her and her husband. But the past is where everything stems from. Pay close attention.

Ms Berry dives into the psyche of two sisters that grew up in the same setting, same household and makes you feel for these sisters by giving us so much of who they are and how much they care and stand up for one another. Each character was important, but one in particular had me questioning who and what to believe. They definitely kept the twists coming. Having the two POVs and the past and present timeline was perfect for the telling of this story. The characters were convincing and had me questioning my own predictions.

Since I listened to the audio, I must commend the narrators. They both had a very distinctive voice. The narrator for Krystal felt like she was the more subdued, almost cold one...but also protective of Nichole. And Nichole sounded like a character that was soft and maybe in pain. Perhaps that she had seen too much. With that, I definitely think they captured their characters with good performances.

Overall, this was a fast paced story that concentrated a lot of the characters, but left a few plot holes with what happened before and after the fire. Some questions weren't answered, but we found out the "why". Kind of. The ending was abrupt and left a bit to be desired. 3.5 stars

Trauma, loss, love and desire.

Krystal and Nicole are foster sisters who have a bond that can’t be broken. They live for their early years with the horrible combination of Veronica and her mother. They live on separate sides of the house.

When Nicole is committed to a psychiatric hospital for trying to kill her husband Aiden, Krystal who is now a lawyer needs to get to the bottom of what is going on.

The story alternates from the present to the past and extremely well as the story begins to get put together one piece at a time.

There is a great storyline to follow of trauma, loss, love and desire. Well worth picking up. Would recommend.

Powerful well crafted

Powerfully read and a simple clean psychological story that is put together so well that it becomes compelling through curiosity with a nice twist at the end. The reader excelled adding to a well constructed book.
