批評家のレビュー

“My kind of book! [It] grabbed my attention from the first lines and I eagerly returned to its pages.” (Julie Klassen, best-selling, award-winning author)

あらすじ・解説

In this sweet Regency romance, Amelia Barret will risk everything to keep her word — even to the point of proposing to a sea captain she’s never met.

Amelia Barrett, heiress to an estate nestled in the English moors, defies family expectations and promises to raise her dying friend’s baby. But she knows she can’t do it alone and finds herself in the surprising position of asking Graham, the child’s father — a man she’s never met before — to marry her.

When the baby vanishes with little more than an ominous ransom note hinting at her whereabouts, Amelia and Graham are driven to test the boundaries of their love for this little one.

Amelia’s detailed plans would normally see her through any trial, but now, desperate and shaken, she’s forced to examine her soul and face her one weakness: pride.

Graham’s strength and self-control have served him well and earned him much respect, but chasing perfection has kept him a prisoner of his own discipline. And away from the family he has sworn to love and protect.

To save the child they’ve both come to love — and any hopes of preserving their fledgling love — both must learn to relinquish control so they can embrace the future ahead of them.

Kind of bummed out

I couldn't listen to the narrator - I only got to 17:22 when I ran out of patience. The narrator is much to sing-song especially with the male voices. I'd rather read this than listen to this version.

Great Story, poor recording.

Would you listen to The Heiress of Winterwood again? Why?

I loved this story. I wish the recording would have been done by a British actress since the story is set in England.

Pretty Good

I really enjoyed this story but I believe the narrator was mismatched to it.
The narrator has a very good voice, and I think she would sound great in something like a documentary.

Good book, didn't love the narrator

The book was good enough, and I really liked the relationship with God that weaved throughout it, but the narrator was not my favorite.

Good story, HORRIBLE narrator.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jackie Schlicher’s performances?

NO, NO, NO. First of all, the story is set in England so an English accent should have been used. Secondly, there is some kind noise in the background like crinkling paper or turning pages AND smacking/swallowing almost the entire time. I usually had to keep the bluetooth almost completely out of my ear just to be able to tolerate this mess. Thirdly, there is hardly any distinction at all between different people talking.

Any additional comments?

Story was good, liked the mystery, but the narration ruined it and I stayed annoyed most of the time and didn't enjoy the book hardly at all. I will listen to another book by this author only if the narrator is different.

It lost me...

At first, I felt really drawn into this book. It was off to a great start. The second half lost me. I did something I've never done before which was to "skim" through the audio recording just to wrap it up! The first half of the book there seemed to be so much potential for an in-depth relationship to develop between the main characters. Instead, the second half of the book was spent dealing with a kidnapping. I was just bored to tears. Sorry. I really have no interest in reading a sequel.

Don't buy audio, buy the Book!!

The story was marvelous but the narration was torturous!! Although the narrator has a lovely voice the reading was slow. Set in England there were no English accents save for one ,poorly done, at the very end of the story!! The story itself referenced a "heavy Irish brogue" from the nurse but came out like more of an attempt at a lilt, but even that was mixed in with regular English. The narrator would have been better used in a different book in a modern day setting. I came away literally exhausted waiting to get to the end.

Held my attention... barely

I like this kind of romance so it held my attention, but the lady reading sounded bland, and the writing redundant.

Blah!

Mediocre writing with the wrong narrator makes for a bad read. Also, the female lead was annoying to listen to. I don't hold this against the author as her writing has improved over the years and she has written better books.

Great story; Disappointing performance

While the story gets a little dark, it was well-written with a good plot. I enjoyed the tale.

It's disappointing when a rich story line with a wide array of characters exceeds the talent of the narrator.

The story takes place in England, yet the only time you hear an English accent at all is with a couple of poor blokes. The nanny is Irish, but the narrator did not make the effort to learn a beautiful Irish brogue. Almost no accent at all! Very disappointing. She does fairly good voices, but her acting is not great. She does not portray the depth of emotion the manuscript describes. They really should have selected someone whose talent matched the manuscript.

Good Christian Regency

Would you listen to The Heiress of Winterwood again? Why?

It was good to find a Christian Regency that was more than a fluffy, mushy romance and actually had a strong supporting storyline and well drawn characters

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

A little predictable but generally good.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The American narrator reading a book set in Britain was a bit of an issue, though she did do her best, I think she found British accents challenging. Also, she seemed to read rather slowly, extending a 350 page book to nearly 11 hours.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Rather too long to listen to in one sitting.
