あらすじ・解説

They say every cloud has a silver lining....

When Freya Miller is struck by tragedy, losing her husband and her home within a short time, she is burdened with many worries. The main one being where she and her five-year old daughter, Skye, are going to live. A chance meeting with the charismatic Dr Marsden changes all that. He offers the young mother the most amazing opportunity: an apartment at one of London’s most exclusive addresses for a fraction of the market rental cost. It’s an offer Freya simply can’t refuse. Within a couple of weeks, Freya and Skye are moving into Adder House and meeting the other welcoming residents. They very quickly feel part of the family.

But just when Freya truly believes all her problems are history, a series of strange, unexplained occurrences begin. It leaves Freya with the unshakeable feeling that even when their apartment door is securely locked, she and her daughter are not alone. Freya thought she’d left all her troubles behind her, yet she soon realises there are problems here that are far more terrifying than before.

For behind the doors of Adder House, everything is most definitely not as it seems.

Old secrets refuse to stay buried, and someone is determined to keep a terrible past very much alive.

bookgirl

Silly, unbelievable story. The voice of little girl sounds like a wicked witch. Don't waste your credits on this one.

Fairly Disappointing

I had the new K.L Slater on pre-order and I couldn't wait to pop it in for my commute. It started out with promise, but sort of unraveled at the half point- and unfortunately it was all downhill from there. I do so love her writing style, but this book had no particularly 'stunning' revelation and was just sort of, well.. boring.

I will continue to read her books, but I can't say this was my favourite.

Do not recommend

This was a slow and predictable story, the narrator was so monotone it was hard to pay attention. The voice of the little girl sounded like a crotchety little old lady. Very disappointing.

Not a good book for audio

Couldn’t keep my interest and main character was boring and not very smart to not realize there was a trick to the whole thing. Couldn’t even finish it.

This is a very disturbing story

I can’t finish it. As a psych major in my youth and one who loves children - this is a horrible and believable tale.

BRAVO! What a great listen!

So glad I chose this title and I think the narrator did an excellent job with so many characters to speak for! Towards the end there was a twist I did not expect. Well, I expected it but did not want to believe it could happen!

Very lightweight little psychological thriller!

I'm accustomed to paying $3.99 for Ms. Slater's Kindle ebooks and getting the Audible version for $1.99. The Apartment costs a full Audible credit. It's not close to being worth it. I've listened to several of Slater's audio books and Liar is the only one worthwhile. Lucy Price-Lewis narrates the other Slater audio books and she does a better job than Tuppence Middleton. I do not understand Audible's huge sales push for this mediocre novel.

Great “Gaslight” with a Twist!

This was my first K.L. Slater book. It had wonderful suspense. It truly reminded me of the classic movie Gaslight, but with a twist. I certainly didn’t guess whodunnit. I’ll definitely be reading/listening to another! I feel a psychological thriller/suspense binge coming on. I truly loved Tuppence Middleton’s narration, with the exception of little Skye’s voice. She did so well with the rest, I hesitate to criticize. Yet, Skye sounded more like an evil old lady than a young girl. I even got a second and a third opinion in my household. My husband said he didn’t know about evil, but definitely old. My son said “old witch.” That’s probably the best description. She did such an amazing job otherwise, I eventually didn’t even notice quite as much. It’s beyond me how any of the narrators keep the voices straight when switching back and forth. I often wondered if they read each voice separately and they were then all put together. Yet, there’s a wonderful video of her recording the book, and she read right through it, switching voices before my eyes. I’d certainly recommend this one!

Great book!!

This book was great! So very glad I preordered it! Highly recommended! The last 1/3 of the book, i was seriously on the edge of my seat. It was non stop action. I never could have guessed what was going on. NEVER!

Narrator: Tuppence Middleton did a really good job. The ONLY thing, the voice of the child was like fingernails on a chalkboard. But the rest of her awesome performance made up for it!

Solid story

Man do I love the British accents. I could listen to this narrator all day long!! The story was solid but I think I worked it up so much in my head that I was just dying for it!

Not For Me

The narration was ok but the story...good grief. So implausible all the way through and the ending, well I fast forwarded through most of it. You might like it but I wouldn’t recommend it.

An Author with a Plan!

K L Slater has a clear pacing to her thrillers which tend for the most part to be actually relatively gentle dramas that steadily ramp up until the end where they do kick off just a little. It's a formula that sometimes works for me, and at others it's been a bit of a damp squib despite her high quality writing. From near the off though this one just has a little bit more of an edge to it including ominous cutbacks to seemingly benign psychological experiments that took place decades ago.

A single mum, Freya, and her daughter, Skye, seem to have hit the jackpot when the eccentric Dr Marsden invites them to rent an appartment at the plush Adder House for a very low rent. Naturally not all is as it seems and through a series of increasingly disturbing incidents makes her question the nature of her new home.

For the thriller genre it's mostly fairly mild stuff but it's well-written, thoughtfully paced and the charmingly named Tuppence Middleton is mostly a very smooth narrator. I say mostly because the voice that she uses for the young Skye is almost certainly going to annoy some people, it is just a little sickly sweet If you listen to the audio sample there is an example just near the end of it.

By the end though I felt quite content with the book and it's definitely a step up from one or two of the others that I have read from this author recently. In this genre It's a pint of mild rather than a snakebite with whiskey chaser but as is often the case with Slater it bares some teeth at the end.

A bit like a 'B' movie

This felt like such an old style 'B' movie story that would have worked well as a condensed 'Tales of the unexpected'. It lacks credibility and the main character is so naive, to the point that I was almost shouting with frustration at the story line as it became less and less plausible. K.L.Slater is so good at writing about children, but this lacked her usual style and pace.

Great book, the ending was very sudden

I would have loved the book to have a few more twists and turns, the ending was thrown in the book in the last 20 minutes. more build up and more attempts to make her crazy needed.

OMG KILL ME NOW - That child's voice is unbearable

Great premise ... liked the way Tuppence Middleton narrated the main character - but her daughter SKYE .... arghhhhhhhh, nails on a blackboard, polystyrene in a blender - I tried and tried and settle down between the inevitable " MUMMMMMMAY".
I even tried to see it as a comedy voice but it was tooooo toooo much to listen to last thing at night as made me to irritated to contemplate sleep - shame as sounded like a good thriller and had plenty of enticing mysteries but thanks to that insufferable child narration I shall never know ...

Disappointing and didn’t enjoy the narrator

I’m a big fan of KL Slater but this didn’t keep me captivated. I didn’t enjoy the performance at all, particularly the voice of the little girl.

It has put me off reading any more KLS books for now.

Another neurotic woman book?

I’ve listened to a few of K. L. Slater’s books. This didn’t live up to the hype for me at least. The ending was very quick but didn’t answer all the questions (which the author did on purpose), there are two interviews at the end. I don’t like that. I enjoy the interviews but wish it was clear they are there because I find it disappointing when I think there is more of the book left only to discover the book ends abruptly. Tuppence Middleton was very good.

Sorry

I hate to write a bad review on a book as I realise someone has worked hard to write it for us. But I really didn't enjoy this book. There was nothing engaging or suspenseful about it. It was interesting to hear the Auther talk about writing it and say that she hadnt really decided on the twists or plot as she started it. That made a bit of sense to me. I will likely try another book by her as I got the feeling listening to her that this wasn't her usual book but the blurb will need to be enticing.

Don't waste a credit - too many plot holes

The premise of this book was interesting, and I had hopes of an intense psychological thriller but it was disappointing and predictable.

Freya is a single mum to 5-year old Skye. She was widowed soon after her husband Lewis left her for her "posh best friend" Janine. There was a weird scene when Lewis and Janine declared their intention to seek full custody of Skye, but then Lewis died (cause of death not revealed) and Freya inherited his insurance as his yet 'undivorced wife'. Janine then all but disappears from the story, appearing only once more to be accused of sinister behaviour, which she denies and runs off laughing into the night with her friend. This was to me, a weird and unexplored red herring story line.

Also, the suspension of belief was hard to maintain, how dumb is Freya? As a mother of a 5-year old girl, approached in a coffee shop by a strange man, while she is by her own admission, desperate and scared of becoming homeless and offered a 'too good to be true' deal of an apartment in one of London's most expensive suburbs, at a "rent she can afford if she and her 5 year old daughter are the right kind of people"... it beggars belief that she would readily accept and move in with her child. She then continues to completely ignore all the red flags and weird behaviours that clearly indicate something sinister is going on in her apartment as they are thrown in her face over and over again.

It was too unrealistic for me, perhaps I am more of a cynic than Freya, but it's highlighted more that once that she grew up in the foster system and has "trust issues" while I just found the whole story completely implausible.

I'm sad I wasted a credit on this book, it's not worthy.

Pretty ordinary story, you won't be surprised with the ending. It'll be more interesting if she wrote more about the 'baby' part of the story.
