批評家のレビュー

"A provocative, challenging, yet non-patronising analysis of the global economy: what it is, how it came to be and why it can never be apolitical. By using ancient myths, contemporary culture and family stories, Varoufakis makes the text intimate and accessible." ( Observer)
"Utterly accessible, deeply humane and startlingly original – a potent democratic tool at the perfect time." (Naomi Klein, author of No is Not Enough)

あらすじ・解説

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Talking to My Daughter About the Economy: A Brief History of Capitalism by Yanis Varoufakis.

Why is there so much inequality?

In this short book, world famous economist Yanis Varoufakis sets out to answer his 11-year-old daughter Xenia's deceptively simple question. Using personal stories and famous myths - from Oedipus and Faust to Frankenstein and The Matrix - he explains what the economy is and why it has the power to shape our lives.

Intimate yet universally accessible, Talking to My Daughter About the Economy introduces listeners to the most important drama of our times, helping to make sense of a troubling world while inspiring us to make it a better one.

Absolutely fabulous

From watching hours of Yanis' lectures on YouTube the only thing I could wish for now was that he'd narrate his own books.

Perhaps this is unrealistic, though. I'm sure he'd rather spend his time writing new books. ;)

Excelent!

Light on cotemporary political and economic controversies. I strongly recommend this book for us and for our children, independently of our convictions.

A caricature that prevents deeper understanding

The author does not make the slightest attempt at recognising the nuances and complexity of the real world. Instead, the book is just another childish simplification of 'evil elites' versus "the people". While there are many real problems that justify the indignation underlying his critique, there is almost nothing to learn from this book given his overall drive to make a caricature of opposing views, when not deliberately and entirely misconstruing them.

(great narrator, though!)

Excellent

Masterly explained, thought provoking and sobering, but with an element of hope laced through it that, we humans, can still choose our destiny if we are brave enough to really look at the reality of market society and the forces that move it. Would recommend.

The naked truth

Economists are as much as scientist as astrologists who compare themselves with aerospace scientists, are for using complex mathematics and charts.

The most brilliant book I've read in ages!

Unexpectedly excellent

This book was completely different to what I expected when I bought it. It paints the picture of the economy in an exceptionally simple yet thorough way. The method of writing as if to a child is very well executed and works wonderfully.

Read a different book if you are new to economics

As a professional economist, I found this book overall pretty embarrassing.

Yanis made very good points during the peak of his career about government debt forgiveness in Greece during the euro crisis. And he made some good points about this I’m his book.

But his failures in politics seem to have led to some very far left views.

There is much to critique or debate about about the optimal state of global finance or politics and central banks, but he takes his criticism to the extreme.

The running narrative seemed to want to bash anyone or structure that had any level of authority or wealth in society.

And, in a book where he wants to teach someone about economics, he misses the point that economic success in recent centuries has done an incredible amount of good in this world.

This is clearly a guy who struggles to have a balanced view about things and has become entrenched in his views.

Put it this way, this is the last book about economics I would want my daughter to read, and it’s the last book that you should read too.

Eye opening and remarkable call to action

With depth and clarity Varoufakis explains the primary drivers of the history, the present and the near future of the economy. His conclusion is that we face a choice between a society with more markets where even the air we breath is for sale - or to extend democracy, to give democratic governments power to govern the creation and distribution of money. The state of the economy is a political choice - not an objective science. I could not agree more as he reminds the reader our fulfilment and growth as human beings can never be met by a market society. In stead of competing for, we can all share in the wealth of a robotic future, and Varoufakis explains how.

To understand the future read this book

Yanis, as ever, clearly explains key concepts and adds his point of view. This is a great primer on the key elements of the economy and how capitalism works and the problems that it causes as well as what it solves. One vital area he looks at what impact AI and Automation all have on the future of society. This alone is why you should buy this book as this is a conversation that everyone should be having. We are at a cross-roads we can live the good life or the bulk of the population can become serfs... the choice is ours and we must help lead our politicians to do the right thing

Great book, difficult narration

Overall: I loved the format of the book, in that Varoufakis is talking to his daughter in a way that it clear and accessible. That said, he still manages to address some of the big issues related to the discussion of capitalism and its history over the last 200 years.

Narration: I found Leighton Pugh’s narration to be intolerable. It really distracted from the content of the book, which, had it been more challenging would have been down right spoiled. While Pugh’s style uses lots of intonation and is full of life, his voice is way too gravely and husky. I found it uncomfortable to listen to his voice through earphones and was pleased when it was all over.

Story: I can’t imagine this book will ever be read by someone who doesn’t already know that there are dire problems with our current economic system. The title is likely to attract people who are already largely familiar with the subject. But, nonetheless, a lot of important points in the critique of capitalism are explicated in this book, in a way that would be accessible to anyone if they cared to give it a go.

Required listening for all

This audio book is required listening to anyone and everyone, economists included. As a photographer, I always thought I was far removed from the economy (in profession at least) but from the very start the author lays out premises that align with my own philosophical attitude towards making pictures, just with the economy. To listen to Yanis' words though the voice of a delightful reader is all the more thought provoking and instilled in me that there is indeed hope to stop (or slow) the commodification of our society and balance that with a higher regard on the emphasis on goods as things , the inherent value (like happiness) they can give us, and as well the good that is capable by us, the people. Thank you Yanis! I hope your daughter enjoyed it too.

Best book for non economic-freak

I've read a few books on economics and this one is the best I've ever read (I'm not an expert).
The author sets up core fundamental ideas which are easy to understand and then keep on building new ones on top of them which create a friendly learning progression. The one concept that helped me a lot was the difference between experiential value and exchange value.
Perfect level of narration for beginners.
No jargon, mainly analogies anchored in real life examples
First 3 quarters of the book is neutral and the last quarter is political pushing the author's agenda. If you're a centrist or lefty, you'll be fine but if you're leaning toward the right you'll probably be offended.

Economics made understandable by torpedoing the myths, stripping away the mumbo jumbo, and using plain language and stories. This should be the economics text for everyone including those who profess to be economists.

Economics simplified but not dumbed down.

Excellent. Concise and understandable. Excellent narration. Don't be fooled by the title, this book is for adults as much as young adults.
