i was writing a VERY LONG review of the full-cast audiobook version of this book when suddenly i accidentally swiped left and made all of my progress in writing the review vanish into the ether.
good god.
okay i can do this. just gotta rewrite everything.
first of all, i love everything about the audiobook.
i’ve listened to full-cast audiobooks before. including ones with sfx (the illuminae files! his dark materials!) and yet i think this one is still the best?
with illuminae files, the sfx was mostly to substitute for the dossier format of the books. you hear the sfx when there are battles or computers involved. during dialogues and conversations, you don’t really get to hear sfx of people talking in the background and sounds of footsteps or the crowds or the environment.
this audiobook though?
every description of someone being nervous, jittery, jumpy, scared, shocked, breathing, walking, shuffling, and so on were added in as sfx. you can picture everything SO clearly.
i also love how most of the characters’ voices are similar to their movie counterparts, especially the golden trio. mcgonagall too! hagrid, the weasley brothers, and everyone else were great.
the ones i didn’t quite enjoy were only draco and snape.
draco’s voice actor sounds like he had to hit a mandatory chuckle check list on every line of dialogue he reads. which would’ve been fine and all if he sounded natural. but no. you can tell the laughs are fake.
maybe i shouldn’t be too harsh. he’s probably just a kid lol.
but he does sound like a snob tho. so that part’s pretty spot on.
meanwhile snape doesn’t sound intimidating at all. alan rickman, you will always be missed 🥀
snape just sounds like an intern. not a teacher with a grudge on harry bc of some teenage trauma bc of the kid’s dad.
in all, i can’t wait for the next audiobooks!!
i didn’t get to highlight stuff bc of the audiobook format, obviously.
so here are some of my favorite quotes:
‘You know, the Stone was really not such a wonderful thing. As much money and life as you could want! The two things most human beings would choose above all – the trouble is, humans do have a knack of choosing precisely those things which are worst for them.’
‘There are all kinds of courage,’ said Dumbledore, smiling. ‘It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.‘
both are quotes by dumbledore lmao. he is wise indeed.
but he sure is annoying if you think about it. he has done some pretty stupid stuff (like letting harry live in misery with the dursleys) which is why dumbledore!bashing is soooooo popular on ao3. i’m not complaining. but i don’t hate the guy.
anyway, the full-cast audiobook was PERFECT!!
