‘Mirror, mirror, here I stand. Who is the fairest in the land?’
Darkly enchanting and richly imaginative, Grimms’ Fairy Tales is a stunning collection of beloved children’s stories that continues to captivate readers to this day.
First published in 1812, and drawing on oral traditions passed down through generations, this cherished collection preserves timeless tales of magic and mischief, often carrying a profound moral lesson. From the perilous woods of ‘Hansel and Gretel’ to the mystical slumber of ‘Little Briar-Rose’ and cunning trickery of ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, Grimms’ Fairy Tales offer a narrative far more unnerving and whimsical than their modern adaptations. The result is an intriguingly eerie compilation that remains a cornerstone of Western storytelling, its remarkable world-building still shaping the fairy tales we tell today.
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785 – 1863) and Wilhelm (1786 – 1859), were German academics, cultural researchers and writers. With a keen fascination for German folklore and medieval literature, the brothers penned the famous collection of folktales, Grimms’ Fairy Tales (1812), which went on to become a seminal work in Western children’s literature.
