あらすじ・解説

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Expectation, by Anna Hope.

Hannah, Cate and Lissa are young, vibrant and inseparable. Living on the edge of a common in East London, their shared world is ablaze with art and activism, romance and revelry - and the promise of everything to come. They are electric. They are the best of friends.

Ten years on, they are not where they hoped to be. Amidst flailing careers and faltering marriages, each hungers for what the others have. And each wrestles with the same question: what does it take to lead a meaningful life?

Expectation is a novel of the highs and lows of friendship - how it can dip, dive and rise again. It is also about finding your way: as a mother, a daughter, a wife, a rebel. Most of all, it explores that liminal space between expectation and reality, the place - full of dreams, desires and pain - in which we all live our lives.

Women are just a product of their fertility

Very very disappointing. The author didn’t even have the imagination to standby the only character not trying to get pregnant or a mother to follow through with the characters commitment to not want children. The writer is firstly a mother and then a writer and has reduced the characters to the same 2D mould

Exquisite

I have no idea what I was expecting from this book, other than it was another Sally Rooney-esque, millennial take on growing up. I’m pretty sure this book tops anything Miss Rooney will do in the next decade or so however, as the author is older and wiser and has actually lived to see what’s on the other side of being young and carefree (or young and traumatised). The story of the three main protagonists is full of wonder, pathos, regret and beauty. The author has drawn the most exquisite picture of moving from youth to middle-age. It should be compulsory reading for everyone from 25 to 45.

Excellent read

Really enjoyed this story of three friends. I liked how it was told from different points of view and was beautifully written.

Rings a bell

This strikes a cord with the joy of youth and the painful yet heart warming reality of life. The fun and the bad and difficult decisions life forces you to make. Highly recommend.

Real

I enjoyed this book and the narration of it. I listened to it for long periods of time, wanting to know what developed with each character. A realistic look at life, without a predictable, fairytale ending.

exceptional

Encapsulating and breathtakingly painful and beautiful: just like life its self. An unrestrained account of friendship, motherhood, love and loss.

London ladies

A contemporary book written by a talented author. Poetic sentences and an interesting structure. However, not fully convinced I liked the description of the main characters. Maybe the author tried to include too many elements.

Utterly extraordinary

This is a stunning book. It is, quite simply, perfect. This book is about the body, it’s fragility, it’s fluids, inconvenient desires and leakages, joys and pains, but most of all it is about life’s certainties: friendship and change.

BEAUTIFUL

One of the best books I’ve ever listened to/read.
So beautifully descriptive and emotive. I would recommend this book over and over again.

Thought provoking

A book that makes you think both about how you want to approach your own life. Beautiful narration
