概要
The Seeonee hills, a warm evening. A wolf pack finds a naked man-cub at the mouth of their cave, and instead of eating him they argue about what to do with him. That argument is the whole book: the boy Mowgli grows up inside a law that was not written for him, taught by a bear who loves him and a panther who saved his life, hunted by a tiger who wants him dead and has wanted it since before he could walk.
Around that story Kipling put six more: a mongoose who fights a cobra in a bathroom and wins on nerve and footwork; a white seal who swims further than any seal has swum to find a beach where men cannot come; an elephant driver's boy who sees the elephants dance at midnight and is not believed; a camel, a horse, a mule and an ox comparing notes on the wars men make them fight. Every one of them is about the same thing, which is what it costs to live among creatures stronger than you and to keep your place without losing yourself.
Kipling wrote these in Vermont in the 1890s, and they are stranger and harder than the cartoons that came after them: the Law of the Jungle is a real legal code, Shere Khan is a real danger, and Mowgli's choice at the end is not a happy one.
This unabridged recording keeps all seven stories and Kipling's own narration voice intact, from the first page of Mowgli's Brothers to the last line of Her Majesty's Servants.
