あらすじ・解説

"It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done...."

With these words and a superb act of bravery and sacrifice, one of the most badly behaved heroes of all time ends Charles Dickens' great tale of the French Revolution.

This is a firework display of a book, a crackling picture of the ravages and excesses of starving, furious men and the astonishing acts of heroism that usually accompany them.

One of the best

I have read Tale of Two Cities as well as listened to audio versions of the book. My favorite telling was done by Frank Muller. I found this version quite by accident, just scrolling and "window shopping" if you will. I was drawn to the telłing immediately. Andrew Sachs's reading is low key and relaxed. It is if he is inviting the listener to join him in witnessing what he is reading. I strongly urge any who loves reading Dickens to listen to Andrew Sachs's reading of this great work. It is a good match.

Fantastic Reader!

I only wish I could have all of Dickens' books read by Andrew Sachs! He expertly transmitted the warmth, gravity, humor, delicacy, chilling evil, affection, horror, grace, subtlety, cleverness, and love that imbues A Tale of Two Cities. Never overdone, pitch perfect!

This is the best reader of A Tale of Two Cities

I tried twice to read this wonderful book via the narration of Simon Vance. Alas, his rendition was as dry as toast and I could extract no humanity out of this most humane of stories. I gulped at buying a second version but did so in hopes that I could discover the full glory of Dickens' romantic account of the French Revolution. I am glad to report that it was worth the expenditure. Andrew Sachs more than satisfied. Excellent job!

Now I understand why this is a classic!

What did you love best about A Tale of Two Cities?

The riveting story, & how much I learned about the French Revolution. I never thought I'd enjoy this because I've found Dickens so wordy, but once my ear became attuned to the cadence, I found it easy to listen to & couldn't wait to get back to the story to find out what happened to everyone.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Tale of Two Cities?

The realization of how horribly violent the uprising was against the nobility in France. I've always liked history & was a French major, so you'd think I would have "gotten" this concept years ago. This book changed how I understand the French Revolution, why the have-nots were so angry.

What does Andrew Sachs bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His narration is perfect. Good voice characterizations, inflections, & tone.

Any additional comments?

Thank you, Audible! I doubt I would ever have read this book, but I loved listening & have since recommended it to others.

Wonderful Narration and Storytelling

The narration was excellent, and the story, compelling. The themes of the story are timeless, despite being set in particulary bloody time in French history, or maybe because of it. Either way, it is an amazing story and the performance is top-notch. Highly recommended.

WOW Andrew Sachs Narrator!

The narrator brings so much color to this masterpiece that each individual scene becomes a vessel for transport to misery, love, and hope within the French Revolution, back when times were really tough. Even the horses in the fog with their nostrils exhaling more fog amongst the hopelessness of the humans comprising one of the very first scenes, becomes truly miserable...from the comfort of one's audible medium of course, like a true aristocrat.

Andrew Sachs's narration is king.

I listened to sections from every audio version I could find and this was the best. Andrew Sachs deserves all the praise he gets and more.

Listen to this book. It's a tale of our times.

When I finished this recording I wanted to start the whole thing again from the beginning. It occurs to me, as it did to the narrator in his personal notes that follow the recording (what a splendid job), that "It was the best of times, It was the worst of times" applies profoundly to the current day. While it's easy and clear to see the worst of times, it is a little more difficult to see the best of times. As I listened, I heard the astonishing voice of understanding and heartfelt caring. I realized that "the best of times" was not in glory or victory or wealth or power, but in simple experiences of caring and understanding. It was in the scene where Charles Darnay approaches Dr. Maness to express his love for the doctor's daughter. He wants NOTHING to disturb the sensitive relationship between Lucy and her father. A moment of pure ecstasy. You will never forget this book.

Incredible Narration

Andrew Sachs makes this classic come alive. The bonus interview at the end is very interesting as well. Mr. Sachs is open and honest about his difficulties in reading Dickens. I sometimes struggle as well but it’s always worth finishing. Good show!

a classic rendering of a classic

Dickens, in all his glory, spins a tale of love, hate, honor, and redemption in the specific time and place of the French revolution, that nonetheless resonates beyond time and place. A masterful rendition by Andrew Sachs.

Incredible!!!

Apowerful and gripping story written in beautiful language that is evocative and very visual without being pedantic or difficult to understand. Some very thought provoking historical elements and comments on human nature by Dickens. Andrew Sachs performs it perfectly, giving the story and characters life. Best read I've had in a long time!

Simply exceptional

The voice performance takes a timeless classic, and brings it to life brilliantly. I wasn't a fan of Dickens before this, but I fear I have been throughly and irrevocably converted.
