The story begins with an investigation into some strange reports of an "opera ghost", legendary for making the great Paris opera performers ill-at-ease when they sit alone in their dressing rooms. Author Gaston Leroux, born May 6, 1868, published his most famous work, The Phantom of the Opera, as a serial in 1909 and as a book in 1910 (with an English translation appearing in 1911). Phantom, with its occult overtones, has been made into several film and stage productions of the same name.

Peu après, les directeurs de l'Opéra se voient réclamer 20 000 francs par mois de la part d'un certain « Fantôme de l'Opéra » qui exige aussi que la loge numéro 5 lui soit réservée.

Alors que Rouletabille et son épouse, la ravissante Ivana, se trouvent en villégiature à Deauville, la jeune femme est assassinée en même temps que son patron, le célèbre professeur Boulenger.
