In the nation’s Capital, someone is re-enacting the murders from a series of grisly horror books, and all the evidence points towards the author as the perpetrator. The big problem with that? He died a year ago. In suspicious circumstances. There were rumours of murder, but no arrests followed the original investigation. Now the victims are those who were closest to him, and it looks like the author has come back from the dead to exact his revenge.

Tempest Michaels has a vampire problem. He’s an old hat at this game and dealing with cases like this are his specialty. Except this time…the vampires are his clients. When someone starts targeting members of the local vampire Live Action Role Play club, there’s only one person they can think of to turn to–their old nemesis, Tempest Michaels. Unfortunately for Tempest, when he takes the case, he doesn’t realise they automatically assume that means twenty-four-hour protection.

Verity King has a problem with her husband. He’s been turned into a frog, and contrary to opinion, that’s not an improvement. A cryptic message, a severed finger in her fridge, and no signs of forced entry make it clear to Tempest why he was called, but Mr King’s worrying transformation is just the first act. Almost before he can add up the clues, a second victim confirms the theme and Tempest finds himself up against someone performing modern retellings of the Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales … with real live human characters.

The city of Rochester is in the grip of fear, a terrifying wizard killing at random just for the fun of it. But is he? Or do the victims have something very specific in common? They each received a business card before they met their ends and Tempest Michaels soon discovers the dead are not the only ones to have been contacted. He has clients lining up, all of them convinced they could be next.

When a series of grisly, execution-style murders rocks Rochester, the police turn to Blue Moon Investigations for their expert help. CCTV footage shows a lone figure stalking Rochester’s ancient high street after dark, dressed like an eighteenth-century executioner, face masked, weapon in hand. A ghost out of history, walking straight into the present. Whoever is it, their victims all hid crimes the killer somehow knew about. Otherwise the murders seem random, but is that really the case?
