I wished that there was a way to make sure that everyone stayed safe, I tried hard each day to do a little more than what was expected. Yet, why wasn’t I surprised when General Barnes arrived with the news I had secretly wondered would ever come?

Mary Beth Johnson has lived in a settlement since the bombs dropped all over the world eight years prior. Each year since she hit puberty, she has become more and more of an outcast due to a genetic trait that appears in those that were within the blast area of the bombs. Now that she’s faced with starving her siblings or leaving, she chooses to leave without listening to her parents. Along her journey, she encounters someone that she didn’t think she would ever see again and ends up going further than she ever thought she would.

Standing on the edge of the mountain, I saw the world for the first time in a new light. While I hadn’t found the perfect place for everyone, at that moment, I knew that everything had changed.
