Cinema has had a hugely influential role on global culture in the twentieth century at multiple levels: social, political, and educational. The part of British cinema in this has been controversial—often derided as a whole, but also vigorously celebrated, especially in terms of specific films and film-makers. In this Very Short Introduction, Charles Barr considers films and filmmakers, and studios and sponsorship, against the wider view of changing artistic, socio-political, and industrial climates over the decades of the twentieth century.

Dr. Watson is called upon to attend the execution of a man convicted of murder. Eighteen months after the ordeal, the murder victim is found on a London dock, actually murdered. If this becomes known, the public's faith in the police, the justice system, and the government itself could be in peril. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson must join forces with Scotland Yard to secretly uncover the deadly scheme that led to a miscarriage of justice, even as they themselves become targets of murder.

A deliberately alternative-canon Sherlock Holmes novel. After Dr. John Watson's death, his final manuscript shocks the world with an unthinkable accusation: Sherlock Holmes was Jack the Ripper. The evidence is intimate, horrifying, and apparently conclusive. But Professor James Moriarty refuses to let the verdict stand. Writing from the shadows, he offers the only defence Holmes can no longer make: a confession. The Whitechapel murders were Moriarty's.

He writes his own case notes. He just doesn’t call them that. London, 1888. Dr. John Carrow keeps a Mile End Road practice above a chemist’s shop and a pocket-book containing the names of patients he has failed to save. As women begin dying in Whitechapel and the newspapers reach for a name for their killer, Carrow begins writing something else: rules. Rules about mercy. Restraint. Selection. Procedure. Rules he tells himself prove he is still in control.

There is a persistent and incorrect idea, reinforced by countless film misrepresentations, that Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were always staid and dull British chaps of middle years (or older), with Holmes a spry, cranky, and impatient eccentric, and Watson a white-haired and portly Boobus Brittanicus, a la Nigel Bruce. Students of the true and Canonical Sherlock Holmes know this to be a falsehood. When we first meet them on January 1, 1881, Holmes is still 26 years old (although he will turn 27 in just a few days), and Watson, already a wounded war veteran, is only 28.

What if the darkness of Lovecraft’s decadent New England overlapped into the Victorian era of Sherlock Holmes? Twenty-five new stories across two volumes pit Holmes and Watson against myriad nightmares from Lovecraft’s fiction—and against those nightmares which his writings have inspired. Join us as we journey from the familiar fog of Baker Street to the rotting gambrel roofs of Arkham, the blasphemous library of Miskatonic University, and beyond....

Bugger It is the unfiltered, deeply human memoir of Stephen J Scott — RAF Regiment veteran, widower, single father, and a man who has lived through conflict, loss, love, and the long road back to himself. From Cold War Germany to the Falklands, from the chaos of service life to the quiet devastation of grief, Stephen tells his story with honesty, humour, and a refusal to let anything — even the darkest moments — stay buried.

In The Purity of the Turf, Holmes and Watson encounter criminals that would confound any other detection team, from smugglers and international spies to a very early copycat killer in the days when newspapers were the only true mass media. These stories span Holmes' career from his work as a consulting detective far from the scene of the crime to his affinity for being right in the middle of the action, and even include encounters with G.K. Chesterton's famed sleuth Father Brown.

At first glance, there’s no evidence of a crime. No signs of force. No clear suspect. But something about it doesn’t sit right. As Walker digs deeper, small inconsistencies begin to emerge — subtle details that suggest the victims didn’t leave by choice after all. Waiting. Watching. Choosing the perfect moment. Because what better place to disappear…than somewhere no one is really looking? A place built on movement. On anonymity. On trust. And at the centre of it all is someone who doesn’t see themselves as a killer… But as a saviour.

The first volume in a suspenseful trilogy of mystery, madness... and murder! The "Jack the Ripper" murders of 1888 and the Cleveland Street Scandal of 1889 shocked Victorian London. SHERLOCK HOLMES takes it upon himself to investigate the Ripper murders and bring the killer to justice... but uncovering the truth reveals a conspiracy with Royal implications. Does the play The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde have a connection to the killings?

Three gripping investigations — where the stakes rise, the cases darken, and the truth becomes harder to uncover.
