This is the story of John Deane of Nottingham, a person who, according to the author, really existed. John Deane is born in 1679 to wealthy parents, but starts out in relative poverty, working as a drover around London. He then goes to sea and rises to the rank of Captain of the Navy, but abandons that position to become "Merchant Adventurer". Next he spends some years in Russia, serving Peter the Great on a Russian war ship. When he had enough of that, he became British Consul, and finally spend some years in retirement in his native WIlford by Nottingham, where he died at an old age in 1760....

Terence, Jack, and Alick met as boys at a boarding school, and later entered the Navy together. While sailing with different ships, their paths have interwoven and they have had many adventures together: first as midshipmen, then as Lieutenants. In this volume, we see the young men rise to the rank of Commanders. But along with the fame and responsibility, the perils waiting for them increase, too. In this way, we see Terence, Jack, Alick, and their young companions chase slavers around the coast of Africa, saving and freeing as many enslaved people as possible, going through fierce sea ...

I am not likely to forget that next morning, the 28th of August, (17). It was a fine summer's morning, and there was just a little sea on, with a strongish breeze blowing from the eastward, but not enough to prevent boats coming off from Portsmouth. I counted forty sail-of-the-line, a dozen frigates and smaller ships of war, and well-nigh three hundred merchant vessels, riding, as of course we were, to the flood with our heads towards Cowes.
