On his first solo mission and deep behind enemy lines, young reconnaissance-fighter pilot, Ensign Max Robichaux, Union Space Navy, finds himself prisoner of the Vaaach, an incredibly advanced race of aliens legendary for their secretive and territorial ferocity. For reasons Max barely understands, the Vaaach decide that they have an obligation to train him to be a Vaaach warrior. Max finds himself on a strange, unknown world, under the tutelage of a nine-foot-tall, carnivorous Vaaach drill instructor, learning an alien way of fighting and stalking and making war.

Max Robichaux’s thrilling adventures didn’t begin on 21 January 2315 when he took command of the USS Cumberland at the age of 28. Before that date, Max became an expert on battle tactics, the psychology of command and leadership, the customs and fighting techniques of the mysterious and powerful Vaaach race, and more. In June 2304, the 16-year-old green Ensign Max Robichaux is given a small but fast and stealthy ship to penetrate enemy space, observe a mock attack on a new kind of enemy battle station, and return with information on the station, enemy weapons, enemy tactics, and other valuable intelligence.

Sometimes Captain Max Robichaux fights by the book—and sometimes he throws the book away. This makes him one of the Union Space Navy's rising stars. It's also what has kept him and his green crew alive...thus far.

The Terran Union is engaged in a vast interstellar war against the Krag Ruthless aliens intent on exterminating humankind. Having encountered the Krag before, Space Commander Max Robicheaux now faces daunting challenges aboard the USS Cumberland: The dangers from the enemy without…and clashes with crew and superiors within. Meanwhile, Doctor Sahin receives a coded message summoning him to a secret meeting which aims to forge an alliance that could change the balance of power in Known Space.
