Samantha Owen is a young, twelve-year-old girl happily living with both of her parents in their suburban home in Park Field, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. Every year the family takes a big trip in the summer months together and this year is no different, as Samantha’s father plans a big family trip to go to Crystal Mountain Theme Park in Florida together. With excitement in her heart, Samantha and her parents fly from their home in Chicago down to Florida, where they catch a shuttle from the airport to go to the theme park.

Matt and Christina Carter live an extremely busy life as a young married couple in Olympia, Washington. Barely having any time for one another, both find themselves in career paths that push them further away from one another, until an auto accident leaves Matt paralyzed from the waist down and in a wheelchair. Realizing they need to make changes in their lives to keep their marriage alive, the couple choose to move out of the bigger city and into a cabin in the heavily wooded area of Elwha, Washington.

Jacob Whitlock is a young drifter who carries his troubling childhood with him everywhere he goes. Having run away from home before he turned 18, he was a young man who was trying to find his place in life with no guidance or support along the way. Jacob soon came to find out that there is a hotel in the desert town of Tonopah, Nevada that is offering people a free room, meals, and pay to anyone who would come to work for them. The young drifter then embarks on a journey to be one of the first to make it to the hotel to get a job.

While hiking the trail, Tyler comes across a campsite with a burning campfire and an old Native American Indian sitting by the fire, silent, still, and stoic as he stared deeply into the dancing flames. Curious about the old man, he sits by the campfire and begins to hold conversations with him as if he is drawn by some unseen force. What Tyler experiences shortly after meeting the old man brings him to the brink of utter madness and despair, as he experiences vivid and horrific hallucinations and delusions from the five guardians he meets there in the forest.

The year 1887 has been a struggle for the poor folks living in the small mining town of Montrose, Colorado. Promised a better life to live west of the Mississippi river, the town is more used for shipping supplies for the mining community through the Denver and Rio Grande Railroads, serving the mineral-rich San Juan Mountain ranges in the south. John Ashberger is one of those men who dreamed of a better life for his family. Moving out west, he looks to escape the war-torn confederate southern states and for better opportunity of frontier life to start over.

Angela Brown had enjoyed her life as a wife. She works full-time Monday through Friday and is home for the weekends. She had success in school and success in her career. One day, though, her life is turned upside down. Her husband, Todd, leaves her for someone younger. Angela is crushed, with feelings of helplessness and uncertainty. Angela decides that she needs to regain her independence and establish herself as a self-sufficient adult without the help of a spouse or anyone else in her life.

It’s the first man made satellite that has successfully entered orbit, triggering the Space Race between the United States and the USSR. Countries from around the world fill their tabloids with news related to the success of the Soviet scientists, dubbing the event as a “modern marvel of scientific ingenuity”.

Having just graduated from college, Parker is excited to get a career started in the United States Forest Service and serve the community in his home state of California. Unfortunately for Parker though, there currently are no forestry job opportunities in Northern California. Except for one volunteer summer job that no one has applied for in the area. However, deep in these woods exists a creature of folklore that hunts humans for prey with a ravenous and insatiable hunger as told by generation after generation of loggers and outdoorsmen in the area.
