An exploration of the New Zealand writer's life told through her journals, letters and stories. Katherine Mansfield is New Zealand’s most famous writer. She was born in Wellington in 1888 and moved to Europe in 1908, where she wrote some of the best short stories in the English language.

Sadness can be about so many things from places to people, from thoughts to actions. Our classic authors including Arnold Bennett, James Joyce, Willa Cather, Joseph Conrad, Ivan Turgenev and many others use their pens and stories to demonstrate the many ways this feeling can take a hold of lives and its consequences.

Published after Mansfield's death in 1923 by her husband, Something Childish and Other Stories contains some of the feminist trailblazer's most renowned works, spanning over a decade of writing. Written with her trademark psychological insight and emotional nuance, the works within this final collection beautifully showcase Mansfield's evolving style through the decades.

In this volume our authors explore the terrors of the mind rather than the horrors of reality, although with their pens the difference makes little difference. We twist this way and that as their talents shape our path towards endings of the nerve-shredding kind.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. They can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere. Human beings are, in the main, social animals, they like to gather, to herd together, to share experiences. But some do not. Either through choice or exclusion their way forward is difficult. In this volume our authors and their characters share their stories.

Laura, guapita, no digas ridiculeces. Nadie espera que la suspendamos. No seas extravagante».

In this captivating collection, Katherine Mansfield explores the complex tapestry of human emotions and relationships. A critic once noted that while these stories are far from cheerful, they lack the pervasive trivial discomfort found in much of modern fiction. With a diverse array of forms and themes, Mansfields work serves as a bold precursor to the literary territory later claimed by her contemporary Virginia Woolf. The male characters often come across as frustratingly rigid, while the central female figures teeter between moments of ecstatic joy and stark neurosis. Throughout, children ...
