Leo Tolstoy is widely recognized as one of the world's greatest novelists and short story writers and a master of realistic fiction. He is equally known for his complex and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, developed following a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became known for his deep moral thinking and social reforms.

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) began writing when he was stationed in the Caucasus in the Russian army. After fighting in the Crimean war, he settled in St. Petersburg, where he wrote a number of stories which reveal an increasing disillusionment with society and the military. "The Empty Drum" is an antiwar story adapted from a Russian folk tale.

Tolstoy's literal interpretation of the teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance are represented in his short story "A Candle", which tells the story of a group of peasants suffering under a tyrannical overseer.

In A Landlord's Morning (l856) Tolstoy incorporated events from his personal life. Nineteen-year-old Nekhlyudov writes to his aunt that he has abandoned his university studies to devote himself entirely to the affairs of his estate - and especially to the welfare of the impoverished peasants living there.

Hadji Murad, Tolstoy's final novel, tells the story of a real-life Caucasian Avar general who served under Imam Shamil, the leader of the Muslim tribes of the Northern Caucuses and, for a time, Russia's greatest enemy. Hadji Murad plans to defect to the Russians and then lead a Russian-backed army to defeat Shamil.

Boyhood (1854) is the second novel in Tolstoy's autobiographical trilogy, which includes Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth. In this work, he combines events from his own childhood with themes that address the moral and social problems of the time.
