A Modest Proposal is a satirical essay by Jonathan Swift written in 1729. It's a social commentary on British society's treatment of the poor. Saying more than this would be a spoiler! Please enjoy this unabridged and crisply narrated rendition of Swift's greatest work.

Celtic Poets breathes vitality into the works of Swift, Burns, Wilde, and more. Cosham's finely honed delivery brings verdant valleys, quaint villages, and drunkards' and maidens' conversations to listeners' ears. What is not to love?

Gulliver’s Travels takes listeners on an adventure to fictional and real places in the world, with fantastical elements such as a society of tiny people, flying cities, and the ghosts of ancient world leaders. Gulliver’s adventure takes him all over, and each location is uniquely themed and satirizes themes from our real world.

In one of the most well-known works of satire, Jonathan Swift puts forth a “modest proposal”. Swift begins by outlining the suffering that the starving beggars in Ireland experience daily. He paints a grim picture of the plight these people face to help the listener relate to the situation before turning the tables and suggesting that to alleviate the economic troubles of the poor, their children could be sold as food to the upper class. The shock from this sudden change is expounded by Swift’s continued explanation of the proposal.

Lemuel Gulliver travels on four distinct journeys to exotic, strange locations, including a place where tiny people live, and another with people 72 feet tall. In each of the places he visits, he encounters inhabitants that exhibit some depravity and some good in the nature of their personalities.

First published in 1726, Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" presents, as a mock travel tale, a series of thought experiments mixed with strong elements of social satire. A good part of the fun is seeing Swift work through the practical implications of each of his "what ifs?" — what if I was suddenly enormously magnified or diminished in size? for example - and delighting in the relish with which Swift indulges his great interest in matters scatalogical. As the tale progresses, Swift's skewering of English society becomes more and more pointed, reaching its ultimate ad absurdum as the ...

This incisive satire has never lost its sting - whether the work of an embittered mind or a profound comment on the Age of Reason and Nature, there is all the fascination of distorting mirrors in Swift's accounts of Lilliput and Brogdingnag, and far more than mere spleen in the way he lashes...

Join Gulliver in this classic story as he voyages all over the place. - Summary by Victoria Bell
