Seven of Shakespeare's most celebrated plays—As You Like It, Hamlet, King Lear, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Pericles, Romeo & Juliet, and The Winter's Tale—have been specifically adapted by Edith Nesbit to introduce young listeners to the Bard' s works. Made accessible to young listeners without sacrificing any essential elements, these classic retellings capture the drama and flavor of each original play while simplifying plot and detail.

Philip and Lucy are suddenly transported into a magic city built out of toys. Winged horses, talking animals, magical islands, and ancient buildings are all threatened with disaster if the children cannot save them through valiant deeds - always contesting with the evil Pretenderette!

Four children rescue a mermaid and plunge into a great sea adventure. As with many of Ms. Nesbit's works, behind the "children's" story is some rather incisive commentary on "grown-up" issues.

Melisande tells the story of a beautiful princess, "Goops" is a poem that descibes exactly how children should not behave, and Prince Prigio relates the tale of a misunderstood member of a royal family.

The adventures of Gerald, Cathy, and Jimmy - who find an enchanted castle, a bewitching garden, a sleeping princess, and a magic ring - are often funny and occasionally frightening!

The world of Anthea, Cyril, Robert, Jane, and "the Lamb" is transformed when they come upon a Psammead (or Sand Fairy) who grants them one wish a day - with unexpected results!

These twelve magical stories contain some of the best things ever written in fairy tales. There are enchanted lands inhabited by kings and queens, princes and princesses who have to outwit wicked fairies and evil magicians. Princess Belinda is condemned to be ugly during the week and beautiful...

(Summary by Nicole J. LeBoeuf)

From the first chapter: "History is a story, a story of things that happened to real live people in our England years ago; and the things that are happening here and now, and that are put in the newspapers, will be history for little children one of these days. And the people you read about in history were real live people, who were good and bad, and glad and sorry, just as people are now-a-days."E.
