Interview recorded with Brazilian artist Lara Viana at Domobaal Gallery in January 2010. She describes her interest in souvenirs and votive settings found in the Catholic Church, and acknowledges an influence from the art of Velazquez and Zurbaran in her refined and ethereal paintings. The conversation revolves around a recent set of still life studies; tableaux of nature morte, that carry implications of transient existence in their subtle conception.

The new exhibition at the National Gallery in London is entitled "Delacroix - And the Rise of Modern Art". In other words, Delacroix, one of the most important artists of the first half of the 19th century, is presented as being important, not so much for what he actually did as an individual creator, but because he in so many ways foreshadowed the kind of art that was made immediately after his demise - in particular by artists linked to Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and even Fauvism.

Alex Katz is one of the great survivors of a heroic period in American art. He is also one of the great unclassifiables. At various times he has been described both as a Pop artist and as a classic American Realist, though critics admit that he does not fit comfortably into either of these categories. What most people admit, however, is that he reflects and presents aspects of American culture and American landscape in a uniquely skillful and economical way.

Cv/VAR 66 interviews Dr. Michael Ryan of the National Museum Dublin recorded at the opening of the exhibition The Work of Angels at the British Museum in 1989. He describes pieces found at Derrynaflan dating from the eighth century including an ecclesiastical paten, jewelry, accessories, and domestic artifacts. It carries a detailed account of Celtic and Pictish craftsmanship and iconography.

In 1975, the American critic, Laura Mulvey, published an article entitled "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema". This has over the years been one of the most influential of all feminist texts. In it, Mulvey made use of a version of Freudian theory, as reinterpreted by the French philosopher and psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. Freud referred to scopophilia - the pleasure of look at other people’s bodies as erotic objects. Mulvey applied this to the cinema.

Sharon Kivland describes strands of influence in her work, which draws on French and Russian literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, in particular concerning the changing roles of women in domestic, social, and political life.

It is an enthralling and unexpected selection, and the anthology resonates beyond this showing. It is from the Eric and Louise Franck collection, which has been donated to the Tate, and is part of the process by which the gallery has very belatedly, but with almost overwhelming enthusiasm, entered into collecting and showing photography as a medium in in its own right, with a very active patrons group supporting acquisitions. One of the benefits of Tate joining the fray is evident in the installation of this show.

British, even more than most countries, like to have a "boss" artist - an artistic figure who is indubitably the head of the profession. In the old days, this need was easily accommodated within the establishment structures of the time. The big boss could be Sir Joshua Reynolds, knighted by the monarch of the day, or Lord Leighton, given a peerage. Both of these were also presidents of the Royal Academy.

The tendency for art to detach itself from any duty to reflect observed reality manifested itself in avant-garde art production almost from the beginnings of the Modern Movement in art. It is already present in pure form in Malevich’s drastically reductive Black Square, which consists of exactly that, a black square on a white ground. It is interesting to note the way in which this work was exhibited when it was first put before the public.

In September 1972, three graduates rented two floors above a cash and carry warehouse at 65A Lisson Street, West London. After a couple of months, one emptied his studio, the first floor front room, and opened the space for exhibitions. There followed a spate of invented artists which made humorous comments on the high-flown conceptual arena. In 1974, the gallery strengthened its identity with the Gallery London Displays, a series developed with sculptor Vaughan Grylls.

When I visited the huge Damien Hirst exhibition staged by the Gagosian Gallery in New York in 1996, one of the most striking pieces was a large glass tank full of live fish. Dumped among the fish were an obstetrical couch, in a rather decayed condition, and various obstetrical implements. For some time after I had seen the show, this image tugged at my mind. It reminded me of something - but of what? Finally, memory dragged up the reference I needed: Hirst's piece was a direct descendant of Salvador Dali's installation, "Rainy Taxi".

Many people - among them, most art-world insiders - think that Joseph Beuys was the most important artist of the second half of the 20th century. Beuys was many things - a shaman, a trickster, a charismatic social and political activist. He spearheaded the return to prominence of the German avant-garde post-World War II, and his impact on both the European and American art worlds continues to be felt today, nearly 20 years after his death in January 1986.

Of the three great Italian High Renaissance masters, Raphael is now the most problematic. Leonardo and Michelangelo continue to fascinate, even though some of the modern audience - myself included - find some of Leonardo's output faintly creepy. Raphael is a different matter. In his own lifetime, he was perhaps the most admired of the three, successful with every type of patron and every type of audience. Where his rivals delayed, Raphael delivered, unflappable and omnicompetent.

Eduardo Paolozzi: Newton Figures features a conversation with the celebrated sculptor Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005), recorded at The Royal College of Art in 1990. In it he discusses work in progress of The Newton Figures (Master of the Universe) and commissions for The Royal Jockey Club Kowloon. He reflects on artists from Fragonard to Rodin and points to effects of the machine on the condition of people's lives which drove his work.

One of Shakespeare's most often quoted lines, from Hamlet, simply asserts that "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in our philosophy." The current retrospective at Tate Britain of the art of Richard Long, the first in London since the Arts Council's Hayward Gallery show in 1991, has been titled Heaven and Earth by Long himself, a phrase he had earlier used for specific works of art.

As the Tate Modern site is developed at Bankside in 1997, interviews are recorded with Dawn Austwick, project manager, and Jeremy Lewison of the Tate Britain modern collection. They discuss the scope of the new galleries, funding issues, the new gallery's location and its future plans. There are thoughts on the diversity of the London Tates, and disposition of its collection.
