Robert Campbell (1829-84) was a Jamaican-born printer, journalist, and teacher who, along with Martin Robison Delany (1812-85), made up the Niger Valley Exploring Party of 1859-60 (Library of Congress), sharing his impressions & observations as a first time visitor to areas of modern day Nigeria. Robert Southey was born in Bristol in England in 1774 and appointed Poet Laurete in 1813, a post he grew to dislike. He was an Oxford contemporary and Brother-in-law of Coleridge and a friend of Wordsworth. He was also an active campaigner for the abolition of the Slave Trade. His work was often critised by other romantic poets, particularly Byron who satirised him in his poem Don Juan. Southey was a prolific poet, his complete works were published in 10 volumes in 1837. Bridges' Eros and Psyche retells the Eros (= Cupid) and Psyche myth first recorded by Lucius Apuleius in his book The Golden Ass. The poem is divided into twelve cantos - one for each of the twelve months of the year - which gives the poem a certain, almost "pastoral" feel. The number of stanzas in each canto equals the number of days in that month: so the first canto March has 31 stanzas, the second canto April has 30 stanzas, and so on. Each stanza is a septet (i.e. comprises exactly seven lines) which follow the same end-rhyming schema of a-b-a-b-c-c-b.(Summary by Godsend)

Robert Herrick had been apprenticed to a goldsmith before entering holy orders. This early training has been credited with influencing his metrical precision and his success with short poems. Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist and poet best known for his children's adventure stories. Born in Edinburgh he travelled extensively during his lifetime before settling on the island of Samoa where he died. Underwoods was Stevenson's second book of poetry published in 1887. In December 1835, fewer than five hundred Cherokee signed the Treaty of New Echota—a document never ratified by the Cherokee National Council or the Cherokee people.
