Il personaggio in grado di risolvere il mistero è profondamente diverso da Sherlock Holmes: è un giovane reporter di appena diciott'anni soprannominato Rouletabille, che, a fine romanzo, l'autore promette di far diventare il protagonista di altri suoi romanzi.
