Kiedy w Stanach Zjednoczonych uchwalono ustawę przeciwko ukrywaniu zbiegłych czarnoskórych niewolników, Harriet Elisabeth Stowe podjęła się opisania stosowanych wobec nich bezwzględności i przemocy. "Chata wuja Toma" opowiada o tych, którzy zmuszeni do niewolniczej posługi, mimo upokorzeń starają się zachować godność. Główny bohater wierzy, że dopóki ma możliwość wyboru pomiędzy dobrem a złem, pozostaje człowiekiem wolnym. Przejmująca historia o uniwersalnych wartościach: o miłości, przebaczeniu i nadziei na lepsze czasy.
