Am Vorabend von Mamma Hesselbachs Geburtstag schellt der Bürobote Hedderich an der Tür und richtet aus, dass Babba Hesselbach abends nochmal zum Chef kommen solle, verhaspelt sich aber und gesteht, dass Babba Hesselbach selbst ihn mit dieser Botschaft beauftragt habe und nicht der Chef. Mamma Hesselbach hat einen Verdacht und bricht in Tränen aus. Anneliese versucht sie zu trösten und lässt dabei durchblicken, dass der Babba geschwindelt hätte, als er behauptete, er habe Überstunden gemacht.

Babba Hesselbach erwartet Besuch von einem Jugendfreund, den er seit 10 Jahren nicht mehr gesehen hat. Dieser ist heute laut Babba Hesselbach ein einflussreicher Berater der höheren Gesellschaft. Die 100 Mark, die er sich bei Babba Hesselbach bereits vor dem Krieg geliehen hatte, hat er jedoch bisher nicht zurückgezahlt.

Babba Hesselbach ist am helllichten Tag aus der Firma verschwunden. Da ein wichtiger Firmentermin ansteht, lässt der Chef nach ihm suchen und bei Hesselbachs Zuhause anrufen. Völlig aufgebracht erscheint Babba Hasselbach und lässt sich von seiner Frau verleugnen. Gekränkt will er kündigen, da jetzt der Neffe des Geschäftsführers sein Büro bezogen hat.
