Nachdem sich Holmes von Alice breitschlagen lässt, sie auf die Reise nach Rotterdam mitzunehmen, setzen die drei mit dem Dampfer der SS Amsterdam nach Hoek van Holland über. Kaum angekommen ist ihr erstes Ziel das Polizeirevier und die Erkundigung nach den Vermisstenakten. Doch eine Hiobsbotschaft lässt sie zusammen mit Inspektor De Vries direkt an den Strand eilen. Ausgerechnet der Mann, der für den Ambra-Fund verantwortlich ist, ist gerade tot in den Dünen gefunden worden.

In den frühen Morgenstunden am Hafen der London Docks ist die Crew der Vicky Rose gerade dabei, ihr Schiff für die Weiterfahrt zu beladen, als ein kleines Fischerboot angeschwemmt wird, darin eine männliche Leiche. Der Kapitän lässt sofort nach Sherlock Holmes rufen. Holmes und Watson eilen an den Hafen, wobei sie sehr schnell feststellen, dass es sich aufgrund des Verwesungsgrades als äußerst schwierig gestalten wird, den Mann zu identifizieren. Einzig ein außergewöhnlicher Fund gibt eine erste Spur...

Der Tote in den Dünen kann als Peter Badner identifiziert werden. Der Mann, der für den Ambra-Fund verantwortlich ist. Holmes und Watson beschließen, sich in seinem Hotelzimmer einmal genauer umzusehen und machen dabei die nächste schreckliche Entdeckung. Eine weitere männliche Leiche liegt ausgestreckt, mit einem Messer im Bauch, auf dem Bett. Als Holmes, Watson und Alice wieder in ihr eigenes Hotelzimmer zurückkehren, machen sie sich über die Vermisstenakten her. Und tatsächlich! Sie haben einen Treffer!

Während Dr. Watson beschließt, am späten Abend die Nachtruhe einzuläuten, begeben sich Holmes und Alice ins Hotel Amerika. Dort findet eine musikalische Abendveranstaltung statt. Alice hat bald einen angenehmen Gesprächspartner gefunden, einen gewissen Thomas Münner, und Holmes unterhält sich angeregt mit einer ihm unbekannten Dame. Doch dann ist Holmes plötzlich von einer Sekunde auf die andere nicht mehr Herr seiner Sinne. Am nächsten Morgen wird er halb tot in einem Strandkorb gefunden.

Holmes, Watson und Alice besuchen den Vortrag über Wale von Frau von Freiherr im Hotel Amerika. Plötzlich fällt es Holmes wie Schuppen von den Augen. Er kennt diese Frau von Freiherr besser als ihm lieb ist. Doch nun überschlagen sich die Ereignisse! Alice wird am helllichten Tag von ihrer Bekanntschaft Münner entführt! Für Holmes gibt es nur eine Lösung! Er setzt Frau von Freiherr die Pistole auf die Brust...
