This is the first of Tennyson's poems to be based on Sir Thomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur. The first draft was composed in 1834, and the finished work was published in Poems (1842). Later Tennyson incorporated the poem into the Idylls of the King (1870) under the title of "The Passing of Arthur". The narrative of this poem was drawn from the third, fourth, and fifth chapters of the 21st book of Thomas Malory's romance.

In this short treatise, New Thought author Christian Larson discusses the power of the subconscious mind and the importance of establishing a working relationship with it. In the words of the author: "What is produced in the within will invariably come forth into expression in the personality; therefore, by knowing how to impress the subconscious, man may give his personal self any quality desired, and in any quantity desired."

In this poem, Arnold tells the story of an Oxford student who abandons academic life to join a band of gypsies. He learns their mysterious, almost magical, and clearly unacademic knowledge and devotes himself to a lifelong quest for direct perception of truth. Unlike the people with whom the poet is surrounded, he never becomes distracted or challenged by corrosive doubt or concern about the trivialities of suburban life.

Although Kabir (1398-1448, or in the Samvat calendar 1440-1518) was born of Mohammedan parentage, in his youth he became a disciple of a noted Hindu ascetic, Ramananda. As a spiritual teacher, he decried the meaningless rituals of both Islam and Hinduism, and preached a path of righteousness, which involved respect toward all things in creation, and detachment from worldly preoccupations. While his teaching provoked hostility from both Muslims and Hindus, after his death each religion claimed him as a saint.

William Walker Atkinson (1862-1932) was an author and publisher of texts covering a wide range of New Thought teachings. According to Atkinson, the idea of 'Dynamic Thought' underlies the entire universe and is the cause of all phenomena. Not only is everything that we see as Life and Mind and Substance an illustration of the Law, but even that which lies back of these things must provide evidence of the same Law.

This short poem, first published in 1717, became one of Pope's best-known verse works. The actual history of the lady appears to have been intentionally concealed by the poet under a mysterious veil. Pope's mastery of the heroic couplet and his perceptive wit are apparent in the many epigrams and epitaphs that he composed. The subjects of these snippets of verse are widely varied, ranging from encomiums to great celebrities like Sir Isaac Newton to witty soupçons, like that attached to the collar of a dog that the poet gave to Prince George (later King George II).
