In the heart of Paris, where art and ambition intertwine, the boundaries between genius and madness blur. A tale of creation, obsession, and the quest for perfection, this story dances on the edge of brilliance. The artist, driven by an insatiable desire to capture the unattainable, confronts the fragility of his own vision. As the canvas comes to life, so too does a world where nothing is as it seems, and the cost of true artistry might just be too high. Balzac's story whispers of the fine line between genius and obsession, where the artist's soul is as fragile as the masterpiece he seeks.

Love has many forms, many needs. Some fall into the dark, into the shadows. Forbidden love has connotations of desire, of possession but also of matters far more unsavoury. It’s a delicate facet of love that our classic authors explain with careful words and superbly crafted narratives.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. They can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that are difficult to achieve elsewhere. In this volume our classic authors turn their words to the religion of Christianity. It’s a fascinating subject for our authors who can explore faith and belief in ways that we rarely subject ourselves to. Whatever your faith these stories raise questions and that are of interest to us all.

In his haunting and poignant novella Farewell (Adieu), Balzac delves into the 19th-century literary landscape of the hysterical woman—sequestered, confined within her madness; voiceless, or eerily reciting chants in her isolated haven. The specter of the first Mrs. Rochester lingers, while the Lady of Shalott awaits the moment when the fragile illusion of her world will shatter. Soon, Freuds earliest patients will find themselves in the waiting room of the mind.

But behind the overgrown garden and shuttered windows lies a story of love, betrayal, and a chilling act of vengeance. When a visiting doctor presses for answers, he uncovers a tale that was meant to stay buried. A jealous husband. A secret lover. A sealed fate. The mystery of La Grande Bretèche reveals itself slowly, with devastating clarity.

Felix Grandet, having married well and become a wealthy landowner and wine-grower, is a miser who watches like a hawk the sugar lumps and the bread slices.
