"La Tulipe noire" est un des romans les plus connus d'Alexandre Dumas. On y trouve tous les thèmes chers à l'auteur : l'aventure, le courage, la grande histoire qui se mêle à la petite... Pourtant ici, Cornélius van Baerle n'a pas d'ambition militaire ou sociale, il veut avant tout créer et faire pousser une tulipe noire. Hélas, ses projets seront contrariés car notre héros n'est autre que le neveu du chef de l'État hollandais, Corneille de Witt, qui vient d'être renversé.

Alexandre Dumas écrit La Route de Varennes dans un souci de vérité historique. Reprenant tour à tour les différents récits historiques pour en montrer les erreurs, l'auteur s’attache à reprendre la même route que Louis XVI et sa famille lors de leur fuite de Paris, pas à pas, pour trouver traces et témoignages de ce grand fait historique. Alexandre Dumas signe ici un un petit roman aussi instructif que réjouissant.

L'action du roman se déroule entre 1572, date du mariage de Marguerite de Valois avec Henri de Navarre, futur Henri IV, et la mort de Charles IX de France en 1574. Alexandre Dumas y met en scène les intrigues de cour, l'assassinat de l'amiral de Coligny, le massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy, l'idylle inventée entre la reine de Navarre et le comte de la Mole ainsi que la pratique de la torture judiciaire à la Renaissance. Il fait de Catherine de Médicis une figure inquiétante, se servant de son astrologue et parfumeur Côme Ruggieri pour faire assassiner ses ennemis. Le roman met aussi en scène la conspiration visant à rendre la Navarre à son roi.

The novel, a deceptively simple story, is set in Holland in 1672 during the amazing tulipmania of the 17th century that brought wealth to some and ruin to many. The story weaves the historical events surrounding the brutal murder of John de Witte and his brother Cornelius into a tale of romantic love. The novel is also a political allegory in which Dumas makes his case against tyranny and puts all his energies into creating a symbol of justice and tolerance: the fateful tulipa negra.

In this Holllywood Stage presentation we find Dantes still loyal to Napoleon in exile on Elba, he carries a message from him but is intercepted and imprisoned without trial. Whilst in prison his fiancé is told he has died and is forced to marry his arch enemy, Count Mondego. Dantes rots in prison for many years but is then helped by Abbe Faria, who leaves him the treasure of Monte Cristo and assists him in escaping prison.
