The Summa Theologica, by Thomas Aquinas, is a fundamental text in Catholic doctrine, a compendium of theology that has been studied and debated since its first publication in the 13th century. Furthermore, it has been widely regarded as one of the classics of Western philosophy, not least...

Two years before he died, St. Thomas Aquinas, probably the greatest teacher the Church has ever known, was asked by his assistant Brother Reginald to write a simple summary of the faith of the Catholic Church for those who lacked the time or the stamina to tackle his massive Summa Theologica. In response, the great saint quickly set down in language that non-scholars can understand his peerless insights into the major topics of theology: the Trinity, Divine Providence, the Incarnation of Christ, the Last Judgment, and much more.

The Summa Theologica, penned by Thomas Aquinas between 1265 and 1274, remains one of the most significant works in Christian theology. Although unfinished, it serves as an essential guide for beginners, encapsulating the core teachings of the era. This monumental text delves into critical topics such as the existence of God, creation, human purpose, Christ, and the Sacraments, weaving a comprehensive narrative of Western theology within the Roman Catholic tradition. In this episode, we explore Questions 90-114 from the Prima Secundae, focusing on Treatises that address Law (Questions 90-108) ...

This sixteenth-century Compendium offers a unique advantage over later interpretations by condensing the subject matter, revealing the connections between doctrines in a clear and impactful manner. Stripped of the Objections and other formalities that may distract modern readers, this work is ideal for both meditation and deep spiritual reading—providing a more substantial experience than many contemporary devotional texts. An appendix with notes is included to assist those unfamiliar with Scholastic Philosophy terms. Please note, this is distinct from Aquinas own Compendium of Theology. - ...

The four books of the Summa contra Gentiles were written by Thomas Aquinas between 1259-1265, before the considerably larger and more influential, Summa Theologica. The purpose of each work was different. Whereas the Summa Theologica addressed the faithful, especially theology students, the...

Thomas Aquinas (c1225-1274) died before he could complete his ambitious plan for Summa Theologica, described as ‘a systematic compendium’ of Roman Catholic theology. Drawing on a wide range of Christian sources - and, controversially, on Greek and Latin philosophers as well as Arabian...

Some years ago, a priest of singularly long and varied experience urged me to write "a book about God". He said that wrong and imperfect notions of God lay at the root of all our religious difficulties. Professor Lewis Campbell says the same thing in his own way in his work, Religion in Greek Literature, where he declares that the age needs "a new definition of God". Thinking the need over, I turned to the summa contra Gentiles.

The Summa Theologica (Summary of Theology) was written in the 13th century by St. Thomas Aquinas (1225 - 1274). It is a massive compendium of all the main theological doctrines of the Catholic Church, and it was intended to be a guide for theology students.

St. Thomas Aquinas (1225 - 1274), one of the greatest philosophical minds of the church, has left us no formal treatise on mystical theology. Instead, his teachings on this subject have been collected from his various works. No such synthesis has been attempted in this book. Rather the editor has simply taken from the Summa Theologica the treatises on religion, on devotion, prayer, and the contemplative life, and presented them in an English dress.

Secunda Secundae is the longest part in this immense undertaking by Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). His purpose was nothing less than to survey the theological teachings of the Catholic Church, while absorbing, controversially for his time, many other strands of learning and philosophy, varying from...

Summa Theologica consists of three main parts. The second part is divided in two, and this recording presents Prima Secundae - Part I of Part II. Taken in its entirety, Summa Theologica forms an essential contribution to the canon of Catholic doctrine and was written in the last decade of his...

This treatise comprises questions 90–97 of the Summa Theologica, in which St. Thomas Aquinas presents a philosophical analysis of the nature and structure of law. Believing that law achieves its results by imposing moral obligations rather than outright force on those subject to it, he proceeds to explore vital questions about the essence of law, kinds of law, effects of law, eternal law, natural law, human law, and changes in law.

The Summa Theologica (or the Summa Theologiae or simply the Summa, written 1265–1274) is the most famous work of Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225–1274) although it was never finished. It was intended as a manual for beginners and a compilation of all of the main theological teachings of that time. It summarizes the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West, which, before the Protestant Reformation, subsisted solely in the Roman Catholic Church. The Summa's topics follow a cycle: the existence of God, God's creation, Man, Man's purpose, Christ, the Sacraments, and back to God...

The Catena Aurea (Golden Chain) presents the commentaries of the greatest theologians (e.g. St. John Chrysostom, St. Jerome, St. Augustine, etc.) of the Church as if they were having a discussion on each verse of the Bible. St. Thomas Aquinas put this opus together from sermons and commentaries on the Gospels composed by over eighty early Church Fathers, providing their insights into each passage. The work shows his intimate acquaintance with the Early Fathers. The work was commissioned by Pope Urban IV, so that everyone could understand the established meaning of the Gospels from the teaching...
