There is something wrong with the Vaim Hotel, though The Guest cannot say what, or why he has come to stay. The only other person there is the hotel’s owner, Brita, who runs it with brisk authority and swears she has seen him somewhere before, though he’s sure she hasn’t. As he acquaints himself with village life, eating each night at the restaurant Brita also owns, The Guest begins to sense that Vaim is not like other places.

Logo escurece e começa a nevar.

Winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature A child who will be named Johannes is born. An old man named Johannes dies. Between these two points, Jon Fosse gives us the details of an entire life, starkly compressed. Beginning with Johannes's father's thoughts as his wife goes into labor and...

From Jon Fosse, winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize for Literature, comes an aching exploration of life, death, time, memory, and the artistic temperament. Initially published separately and brought together here in a single volume, Melancholy I & II are essential entries in the oeuvre of one of the...

Winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature This is Jon Fosses critically acclaimed, luminous love story about Asle and Alida, two lovers trying to find their place in this world. Homeless and sleepless, they wander around Bergen in the rain, trying to make a life for themselves and the child...

Winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature One of Jon Fosses most acclaimed novels, Boathouse is told from the perspective of an unnamed narrator leading a largely hermit-like existence until he unexpectedly encounters a long-lost childhood friend and his wife. Told partially in a...

Winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature In her old house by the fjord, Signe lies on a bench and sees a vision of herself as she was more than twenty years earlier: standing by the window waiting for her husband Asle, on that terrible late November day when he took his rowboat out onto the...

Winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature Jon Fosse said farewell to theory early in his career, choosing poetry, fiction, and drama as his mediums of choice. Here, however, in a selection from his two books of essays, we see just how incisive a critic and memoirist he can be. Not only...

I is Another follows the lives of two men living close to each other on the west coast of Norway. The year is coming to a close and Asle, an aging painter and widower, is reminiscing about his life. He lives alone, his only friends being his neighbor, Åsleik, a bachelor and traditional Norwegian fisherman-farmer, and Beyer, a gallerist who lives in Bjørgvin, a couple hours' drive south of Dylgja, where he lives. There, in Bjørgvin, lives another Asle, also a painter. He and the narrator are doppelgangers-two versions of the same person, two versions of the same life.
