Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Johns was commissioned at the RAF College Cranwell in 1959 after completing flying training on Piston Provost and Meteor aircraft. Following 9 years service as an operational fast-jet pilot, primarily on the Harrier, he commanded both a Harrier squadron and the Harrier Force in Germany, then became a qualified flying instructor during which time he taught The Prince of Wales to wings standard. A succession of national and NATO senior appointments followed, culminating in his promotion to Chief of the Air Staff and Air ADC to the Queen.

Richard Vaux has done his share of dirty work, but nothing like this. His employer, Trans World Airlines, wants him and a crew to sneak into Beirut, Lebanon, at the height of a civil war, to reclaim an airplane hijacked by Palestinian terrorists. TWA can't say for sure whether the plane will fly or whether it has been wired to explode in flight. And that's assuming they aren't attacked by one or more of the rival militias who pass the time shooting at each other across the tarmac, but only because there haven't been any Americans to kidnap in a while.

Nattanya Andersen's cherished career as a flight-attendant for one of the world's largest airlines careened to a halt, when a jet-engine-explosion five feet away from her at 6,000 feet altitude shortly after take-off left her with post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD). The mental health professions' apparent lack of knowledge concerning the treatment of PTSD-sufferers and Nattanya's desire to help herself lead her to search for empirical studies on PTSD and other health-issues and dangers facing air-crew - and by extension their passengers - on a daily basis.

The volume features true stories of aircraft and its passengers or crew who disappeared into thin air. Thousands of flights move millions of pounds of work from city to city every night while the rest of the country is asleep.
