Gli effetti devastanti della guerra non riguardano solo il fronte militare, ma anche il "fronte interno", il Paese tutto. La vita dei civili viene sconvolta, sotto il profilo materiale come sotto quello affettivo, per la lontananza o - peggio - per la perdita dei familiari. Nella Grande Guerra l'Italia compie uno sforzo organizzativo, industriale e umano sbalorditivo per un Paese così debole. Nel mondo, però, di quegli anni tutti ricordano un unico episodio, un episodio il cui nome ha assunto un valore etimologico strettamente collegato all'umiliazione: Caporetto. Ma di questo non possiamo incolpare gli altri; in quell'occasione è emersa l'altra faccia dell'Italia, un Paese sospeso fra modernità e arretratezza. Inefficienza, retorica, irresponsabilità della classe dirigente: retaggi da cui forse non siamo mai riusciti a liberarci.

Il logoramento della vita di trincea, la consapevolezza dell'inutilità dei sacrifici, la disciplina durissima: tutto questo porta i soldati a un diffuso desiderio di ribellione, un desiderio che spesso sfocia in episodi di disobbedienza individuale e collettiva o, più frequentemente, nella diserzione. Per sottrarsi all'orrore della guerra molti, poi, "fuggono nella malattia" e a decine di migliaia vengono ricoverati in manicomio. La documentazione processuale e psichiatrica ci restituisce la loro voce, la loro rabbia, la loro disperazione.

Contadini, operai, artigiani, bottegai, borghesi, intellettuali: la Prima guerra mondiale scatena in tutti coloro che vengono trascinati nel turbine del conflitto un irrefrenabile bisogno di scrittura. Milioni e milioni di lettere e cartoline vengono spedite da e verso il fronte per tenere uniti i fili delle relazioni interrotte. E si scrivono diari su supporti di fortuna per cadenzare, giorno dopo giorno, la propria vita tormentata, cercando nella pagina un appiglio per non perdere l'orientamento.

Come si combatte e come si muore nella Grande Guerra? Artiglierie micidiali, mitragliatrici sterminatrici, bombardamenti aerei futuribili; ma anche trincee di fango, doline allagate, il secco terreno carsico appena scalfito. Ogni battaglia ha significato per decine di milioni di europei essere esposti al rischio di morire in modi opposti, ora modernissimi ora arcaici; colpiti da lontano e dall'alto da granate e bombe devastanti o in attacchi corpo a corpo, alla baionetta, al pugnale, con mazze quasi medievali.

Attirandosi l'accusa di tradimento, nel maggio 1915 l'Italia dichiara guerra all'Austria. La decisione è una scelta grave e azzardata. Allo scoppio del conflitto, nell'agosto 1914, il nostro Paese era in effetti alleato con le Potenze centrali, ma aveva deciso di mantenersi neutrale. Erano seguite rivendicazioni nei confronti dell'Austria-Ungheria, colpevole di aver tenuto all'oscuro l'alleata dei propositi di guerra. In un contesto di grande ambiguità il Governo italiano finì allora per stringere un accordo con la Triplice Intesa...

In quell'afosa giornata del 2 luglio, a Trieste la darsena accoglie le salme dell'arciduca Francesco Ferdinando d'Asburgo e della moglie Sofia. Poi la messa funebre e il lungo corteo fino alla stazione della Ferrovia meridionale.
