Violenze in famiglia e sul lavoro, regolamenti di conti tra bande, aggressioni a sfondo xenofobo e uccisioni di massa: gli episodi riconducibili all'odio sono innumerevoli, e riguardano sia i rapporti interpersonali sia i rapporti fra i gruppi sociali. Che cosa caratterizza questa complessa esperienza psicologica? Il volume ci descrive i processi che generano e alimentano l'odio; che cosa ha in comune con amore, rabbia e paura; i molti linguaggi in cui si esprime.

È giusto perdonare? Quanto può far bene alla vittima? Esiste perdono senza riconciliazione? Più semplice con se stessi o dopo un'offesa ricevuta, più complesso tra gruppi politici e religiosi, il perdono richiede tempo e fatica, ma è necessario per non dimenticare. Il perdono si prospetta come via alternativa alla vendetta o alla fuga.

Saper aspettare è una virtù. Ce lo sentiamo ripetere spesso: "Devi portare pazienza!", "Non essere impulsivo!", "Non avere fretta!". Perché è così importante saper aspettare? Come mai è così difficile farlo? Quali sono i costi e le sofferenze dell'attesa? Ma a volte aspettare diventa un vizio, quando cincischiamo e perdiamo tempo. La pigrizia, però, si può vincere: l'uso strategico delle scadenze - anche di quelle più insidiose - può, ad esempio, aiutarci a tenere fede agli impegni.

Tutto sommato il conformismo gode di una certa fama, almeno in parte, immeritata. Una certa condivisione del modo di pensare e agire degli altri è indispensabile nella vita di relazione. È quando si sposano idee e si adottano comportamenti anche in contrasto con il nostro intimo sentire, solo per stare dalla parte della maggioranza, che si entra nell'accezione negativa del termine.

Assumere giudizi preconfezionati, avvalersi di conoscenze non verificate, accontentarsi di spiegazioni semplicistiche, lasciarsi persuadere da impressioni superficiali: a questo in parte siamo costretti sia dalla sovrabbondanza di informazioni e contatti, sia dalla necessità di organizzare le nostre idee sulla realtà. Se questo è un formidabile meccanismo di difesa, dobbiamo tuttavia guardarci dalla sua rigidità che ci conduce a pietrificare uomini e cose, fino a rifiutarli e trasformarli in nemici.

Nel 2007 Umberto Galimberti ha pubblicato un libro, "L'ospite inquietante. Il nichilismo e i giovani", in cui descriveva il disagio giovanile da imputare, a suo parere, non tanto alle crisi psicologiche a sfondo esistenziale che caratterizzano l'adolescenza e la giovinezza, quanto a una crisi da lui definita "culturale", perché il futuro che la cultura di allora prospettava ai giovani non era una promessa, ma qualcosa di imprevedibile, incapace di retroagire come motivazione a sostegno del proprio impegno nella vita.
