Caterina dettò il "Dialogo della Divina Provvidenza" in volgare ai suoi discepoli Neri Pagliaresi, Stefano Maconi e Barduccio Canigiani nell'autunno del 1378, terminando l'opera il 13 ottobre. Il s'agit d'un écrit profond, saisissant, d'une révélation authentique de son âme, au point qu'elle-même l'appelle ainsi : mon âme ("Lettre à Luisa de la Cerda", 23 juin 1568, 3 ; V 16, 6 ; V épilogue, 4). Sainte Thérèse a fait dans ce livre un effort systématique - le premier dans l'histoire de la pensée et de la littérature - pour déverser en ces pages la totalité de sa personne, en sorte que les critiques littéraires le considèrent comme le livre le plus personnel de toute la littérature espagnole.
