I modi in cui è avvenuta l'unificazione italiana hanno fatto sì che il nuovo Stato abbia dovuto affrontare in rapida successione sfide che altrove sono state diluite nell'arco di secoli. Ciò ha lasciato segni evidenti sul successivo sviluppo politico e sulle architetture istituzionali.
